It’s not just the super-comfy interiors that make The Relish such a tempting port of call. There’s a sense of generosity here: a drink on the house each night in the sitting room; tea and cakes on tap all day; free internet throughout. This is a grand 1850s merchant’s house on the posh side of town – lovely old bricks and mortar, softly contemporary interiors. Laura and Rakesh took over recently and have already pulled out the paintbrushes, so wind up the cast-iron staircase to find bedrooms that make you smile. You get Hypnos beds with padded headboards, crisp white linen and pretty throws. There’s a sense of space, a sofa if there’s room, big mirrors and lovely bathrooms. All are great value for money. Downstairs candles flicker on the mantelpieces above an open fire, the high-ceilinged dining room comes with stripped floors and padded benches and in summer you can decamp onto the terrace for breakfast, a communal garden stretching out beyond. You’re one street back from Folkestone’s cliff-top front for big sea views. Steps lead down to smart gardens, the promenade and waterside restaurants.
No meal service other than Breakfast. Breakfast is on the ground floor in a large wooden floored, high ceilinged bright room overlooking Augusta Gardens. Individual tables are well spaced. There is an option to eat Breakfast on the terrace overlooking Augusta Gardens. They use locally sourced food as much as possible. A menu is placed in the bedroom for guests to pre-order the night before (but ordering on the day is also possible). Hot cooked breakfast including vegetarian is on offer as well as any combination. Breads, Pastries and preserves are available as well as Cereals and fresh fruit.
