The Experience

Hop on the train from London (1 hour 20 minutes) for a lazy couple of days pottering around this buzzy town. Hunt for antiques, browse through boutiques, explore the lively Saturday morning food market.

At the pub, a straightforward brick exterior gives way to cool, colourful interiors with a relaxed feel. Find a comfy lounge with an open fire and an eclectic mix of mid-century furniture – just the spot to read a book or sip a cocktail. Bag a seat on a velvet banquette for supper. Rachel O’Sullivan, of Polpo fame, heads up the kitchen. Expect British classics and comfort food with a twist. Breakfast is generous too – pair it with an excellent Bloody Mary.

Behind the velvet curtain, spread over two floors, are eight gorgeous bedrooms. Each different, some overlooking the high street, others the courtyard and church. Flick through the vinyl and pop on a record – you’ll unwind here.

Step in to what looks like a typical high street pub and you are in a stylish setting more at home in the 60's. A place Terrance Conran would feel at home in. All bright clean and very comfortable. The restaurant with open kitchen serves daily specials. Upstairs are 8 bedrooms all ensuite and with special touches such as record players and vinyl collection. You are just minutes from the sea.

The neighbourhood

Smaller than Whitstable and (slightly) less trendy than Margate, Deal's higgledy-piggledy houses, long pebbly beach, striking concrete pier and thriving culture scene will have you hooked. It has a handful of independent galleries to browse (spot local artists on the walls of The Rose), a castle to visit and is close to the infamous White Cliffs.

Local points of interest from Christopher Hicks & Alex Bagner

  • Long before The Rose was even a glimmer in our eye we’ve loved hosting and proudly showing our guests what it is about this seaside town that we’ve so fallen for. There are already many guides to Deal but here's our top five must do's.
  • Take in the sea air/go for a dip. Stroll along the beach, walk up the pier, grab an ice-cream/mug of tea from the Deal Beach Parlour. May to September (or beyond if you’re feeling brave) grab a towel from reception and dive in.
  • Go for a good ole walk along the spectacular shores and up along the white cliffs to St Margaret’s Bay.
  • Mooch around the winding streets of the conservation area with lovely vintage shops, boutiques and galleries in Deal. On Saturday mornings the market is on at the top of the high street with local produce, flowers and bric-a-bric.
  • Visit a castle. Take your pick from the atmospheric Deal Castle (10 minute walk), the utterly enchanting Walmer Castle & Garden (20 minute walk) or the legendary Dover Castle (20 minute drive).
  • Hang on the beach. In the winter you get the place to yourself, while In the summer Hut 55 has deck chairs, beach reading and ready-made picnics. Rent a bike at Mike’s bikes, and explore further down the coast to Walmer and Kingsdown.

Christopher Hicks & Alex Bagner

Ex design editor of Wallpaper magazine, Alex Bagner, and her husband, Chris Hicks, who is descended from an old Deal brewing family always dreamed of opening their own place here. They are pretty involved in the business but you're looked after by manager Loren and her friendly team.
