Red Pump Inn

Clitheroe, Lancashire
Pub with rooms

Elegant country inn with restaurant in gorgeous Ribble valley. Lovely rooms, scrumptious steaks, candles and views

8 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

Down meandering lanes in the lovely Ribble valley is a handsome roadside inn with a south-facing terrace tumbled with flowers. In the cosy snug bar: flag floors, crackling fires, oak settles and tables, and shuttered windows with green views. Changing cask ales might include Bowland Hen Harrier and Moorhouse’s Pride of Pendle, while Jonathan hand-picks wines and malt whiskies. For lunch there are two rooms to choose from: one cosy with mustard walls, the other with bare oak tables and settles by the wood-burner. In the evening, sit in the large, beamed, candlelit restaurant and tuck in to something from the chargrill (steaks are to die for). The menu is warming, hearty and rich, and meat comes from Ginger Pig. Try lamb’s kidneys with spinach and bacon, home cured salmon with caper and lemon dressing, slow roast pork belly and bean cassoulet. The eight bedrooms have Fran’s design flair with French antique beds, wonderfully comfy mattresses and super wet room showers; hearty Irish breakfasts with white pudding await. Clitheroe Castle and the Forest of Bowland are nearby.

My sister and I enjoyed a lovely evening and an absolutely delicious meal at Red Pump Inn. The service was excellent, friendly but not intrusive. The staff were professional and very helpful about choices of both food and wine. We would most definitely recommend eating at this lovely Inn.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Jonathan & Fran Gledhill

  • This part of Lancashire is famous for its ‘Pendle Witches’. Visitors can follow the journey taken by the accused witches over 400 years ago -from the moorlands of Pendle Hill, to the mighty court of Lancaster, you can uncover our dramatic & historic past!
  • Close to Stonyhurst College, Whalley Abbey, Pendle Hill, Hurst Green and the glorious views through the Trough of Bowland. Just ask Fran for details of these fabulous walks ... she's done them all!
  • Just 10 minutes from Clitheroe town centre, bus and train station, where Clitheroe Castle Museum stands high on Castle Hill. It tells the story of Clitheroe and the surrounding area: there’s something for everyone to unleash their imagination.
  • For fans of star gazing, the Forest of Bowland was recently named a Dark Sky Disovery Site. On a clear cloud-free night, the skies become home to the likes of Orion, Taurus & Andromeda. Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus are also visible at times.
  • For wedding guests, The Red Pump Inn provides the nearest accommodation for weddings at the Tithe Barn at Browsholme Hall, The Outbarn at Clough Bottom and Bashall Barn.
  • A short drive away is Bowland Wild Boar Park, offering a fun day out with the family. Enjoy a picnic or go for a ramble around the footpaths of the park whilst viewing wild boars, llamas, wallabys, red squirrels, pet lambs and many more animals.
