The Experience

You can be in central London in 15 minutes from this Victorian townhouse on a quiet leafy street. Philip and Winkle have brought country-house elegance and the fruits of far-flung travels to South London, and their home is an oasis from the hustle and bustle.

Bedrooms are at the top of the house; there’s space for an extra bed in the single room. Come down to an airy, art-filled kitchen for breakfast: continental or full English (mainly organic) with interesting breads, nuts and seeds and fruit salads.

Winkle is good humoured and has masses of advice on what to visit and where to eat. Return and relax in her award-winning garden with its parterre, arbour, brimming borders and secluded seats.

In this warm, elegant and calm bolthole with easy access to central London, Winkle is welcoming to all her guests and nothing too much trouble. Her love of cooking and passion for gardens is a real treat for everyone to enjoy. On sunny summer mornings delicious breakfasts, which are as organic as possible, are served in the garden surrounded by parterre, beautiful borders and special corners. A perfect place to tuck into her infamous afternoon teas too! In winter it's home from home, with cosy bedrooms, crisp linen, woollen throws and hugely hospitable hosts on hand to help.

Rebecca, Sawday's inspector

"Thank you Alistair Sawday for drawing my attention to this wonderful B&B. The room was extremely comfortable and the hosts so welcoming that it made it an awful lot easier to be away from home. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is a joy to come back to after a long day!"

Arabella, Bath

Winkle's place really is different class. She made us feel more welcome than some of our best friends! Nothing was too much trouble, everything at this B&B is excellent. We especially enjoyed the breakfasts, with hot food laid out in heated pans on the sideboard for you to select from and wonderful home-made bread. Highly recommended, extremely comfortable in all respects.

The best B&B in England! Beautiful house and magnificent garden. Cozy room with White Company linens and fresh flowers from the garden. Winkle is one of the nicest people in the world. She will take an interest in whatever you want to do, offer suggestions on where to go or help you with transportation if needed. Breakfast is a feast with homemade bread, jams and fruit compote to accompany the made-to-order delicious full English breakfast - all served on beautiful china in a light-filled kitchen with views of her award-winning garden. Great location with easy access to central London.

Winkle's B&B is charming: the bedrooms are beautifully presented and the house has a calm and welcoming feel. I liked the little touches (lovely biscuits and tea in the room on arrival, interesting books on the bookshelf in the room). The breakfast room overlooks Winkle's exquisite garden, and the organic full English was delicious. I will certainly go again - it's like a home from home in London.
