This is a deliciously quirky hotel, part 19th-century Viennese coffee house, part 20th-century bohemian dive, part 21st-century gentleman’s club. It sits peacefully on St John’s Square in the epicentre of trendy Clerkenwell, both away from the city and very much a part of it.
A formal London exterior gives way to theatrical interiors. Rooms overflow with beautiful things – one has a four-poster; some are tucked under the eaves. You get rugs on wood floors, cool tunes in the air, and a mirrored cocktail bar where you chat to the barman as he mixes your Negroni. Match your favourite cocktail with tasty bar snacks: scotch eggs, sausage rolls, sharing boards, or skip lunch for a sumptuous afternoon tea instead.
Across the square their sister hotel, has a great evening menu. Walk to the Tate Modern via Millennium Bridge; check out Leather Lane market for some street food. St Pauls and Farringdon Station are close.
