The Zetter Townhouse

A rare find – a small, intimate London hotel that mixes great style with a relaxed vibe and some lovely rooms – don’t miss the cocktails

15 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 - 4

This is a deliciously quirky hotel, part 19th-century Viennese coffee house, part 20th-century bohemian dive, part 21st-century gentleman’s club. It sits peacefully on St John’s Square in the epicentre of trendy Clerkenwell, both away from the city and very much a part of it. A formal London exterior gives way to theatrical interiors. Rooms overflow with beautiful things – period furniture, claret wallpaper, glass cabinets filled with curios, a couple of Corinthian columns for good measure. You get rugs on wood floors, cool tunes in the air, then a mirrored cocktail bar where you chat to the barman as he mixes you a Calpis Sour. Match your favourite cocktail with yummy bar snacks: scotch eggs, sausage rolls, sharing boards, or skip lunch for a sumptuous afternoon tea instead. Rooms have lots of colour, art everywhere and robes in sparkling bathrooms. One has a four-poster with a Union Jack canopy, those in the eaves have painted bedheads; you get Hypnos beds and crisp linen, antique furniture and bluetooth speakers. Across the square their sister hotel has a fab evening menu and Farringdon Station is close.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Natalie Raw

  • The nicest way to see the city is by boat and it’s definitely the best way to get to the O2 at Greenwich.
  • If you’re looking for a quiet spot to relax and read a book, the garden of St John opposite The Zetter Hotel & The Zetter Townhouse is the perfect place for some peace and quiet.
  • If you want to have a pint in a traditional pub, The Jerusalem Tavern on Britton Street is designed to look like one of the oldest in London. The building dates back to 1720.
  • The Rio Cinema in Dalston is a little gem and a great place to watch independent films.
  • The walk from the hotel to Tate Modern via the Millennium Bridge is a wonderful way to see this part of London.
  • Postman’s Park near St Paul’s is a really special and peaceful place with a lovely memorial. You might recognise it from the film Closer.
