This is a fantastic find, a beautiful hotel close to Herne Hill and its lovely park, Brixton and its hipster groove and Dulwich and its famous art gallery. There’s been a hostelry on this spot for over 500 years. The current version is a dream, a delightful mix of old and new. A smart Georgian exterior gives way to beautiful interiors. You’ll find open fires, panelled walls, then an airy restaurant with a wall of glass that opens onto a terrace for great food and a good pint. It draws a local crowd – who doesn’t love having an excellent pub on their doorstep? Cool tunes float in the air, lights go down at night and candles flicker. Bedrooms upstairs are hard to fault: padded headboards, colourful throws, quirky art, robes in sparkling bathrooms. All have coffee machines, air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs. Spin down for a delicious dinner, perhaps salt cod fritters, a bavette steak, coconut panna cotta with pineapple and rum. Staff are lovely, don’t miss Brockwell Park and its wonderful lido, perfect for summer days. Finally, the most coveted possession in London: a car park for guests!
