Dockings Cottage

A country cottage next to the grounds of a stately home. Dogs can run free in the enclosed garden, the North Norfolk coast is in easy reach

3 beds

2 bedrooms

Sleeps 4

This tranquil cottage is next to open fields and Hindringham Hall’s gorgeous gardens, 12th-century moat and medieval pond. The barn was converted after the war for the head herdsman, Mr Docking, who lived here with his bride.

Inside, amuse yourself with games, books and cards next to the cosy wood-burner. Outside, light the barbecue and admire the roses in the enclosed garden while you cook supper, or there’s a tennis court you’re welcome to use on prior arrangement. Gardeners will love visiting the Hall grounds, which are open on Wednesday mornings and Sunday afternoons between April and the end of September.

A bridle path for walks leaves from the door, and the North Norfolk coast is only ten minutes’ drive – take the dogs to wide sands of Holkham and Wells-next-the-Sea, and the enticing aromas of Stiffley Marshes. Don’t miss the six pretty villages called the Burnhams near Brancaster, the best-known being Burnham Market. There are also five stately homes nearby: Blickling Hall, Felbrigg Hall, Sandringham House, Houghton Hall, Oxburgh Hall.

The neighbourhood

The cottage is set near the pretty village of Hindringham. As well as walking paths from the house, there’s a bridle path and three pubs within two miles – ask your hosts about eating places as well as farm shops; Blakeney Deli is a good option for pre-made meals if you don’t want to cook. It’s a ten-minute drive to the North Norfolk coast – walk the coastal path, visit sandy beaches in Holkham, take boat trips to see the seals from Blakeney Quay.

Local points of interest from Edward & Vanessa Tucker

  • In rural Norfolk yet perfectly situated to access the beautiful North Norfolk beaches. Miles of sand at Holkham or salt marsh at Morston with its harbour for sailing boats, whilst stoney Cley is perfect for swimming with its clear deep water.
  • This premier 4* Gold Cottage is perfect for dog lovers with its fenced garden and next to a bridlepath with easy access to walks around the village. By car the dog friendly beaches of Morston and Wells are just 10 mins away. More than 1 dog? Not a problem.
  • For shopping Burnham Market has all you could want....and more, the Georgian Market Town of Holt is just 7 miles away. Fakenham has a market every Thursday and the lovely harbour town of Wells still has a lifeboat and is not to be missed.
  • Wet days? Try the Steam museum at Thursford or there are 5 Stately homes within a 30 min drive. Catch the Steam Trains from Holt to Sheringham or Walsingham to Wells. Cromer has the last End of the Pier show in the UK.
  • Fantastic restaurants and pubs galore with locally caught sea food, meat reared by the butcher and fresh local fruit and vegetables. Two excellent farm shops are within 5 minutes drive of the cottage.
  • Bird reserves (Titchwell, Cley and Pensthope) and Gardens to visit include Hindringham Hall next door which was in the May 2015 Guardian Newspaper as one of the Best 12 secret gardens in the U.K.

Edward & Vanessa Tucker

Edward grew up in Norfolk so knows the area exceptionally well and both he and Vanessa share a passion for the countryside and outdoors. They have lovingly restored the cottage and look forward to introducing others to their area.
