The Experience

This semi-detached cottage has been renovated with great imagination and craftsmanship by Sarah and Stuart, which shows through in both the building and the décor, a charming mix of old and new.

The sitting room has comfy sofas, a smart TV and books and games; cosy bedrooms are adorned with fresh flowers and have views of the garden or open countryside. An extension houses the huge kitchen, kitted out with everything you need for serious cooking and a welcome hamper of treats to get you started.

French doors lead to a patio and an enclosed garden with plenty of space for play. Wyken Hall (seven miles) is an award-winning vineyard, restaurant and café; Bressingham Steam & Gardens is great for a family day out. The Georgian town of Bury St Edmunds (20 miles) has plenty of restaurants, cafes and independent shops, as well as a ruined abbey and cathedral.

Due to a cancellation we were able to secure a last minute escape to Sarah and Stuart's beautiful cottage in Norfolk. We arrived to a sparklingly clean and beautifully styled cottage which was bigger than the pictures had us think. There was fresh milk in the fridge, fresh bread and butter, fruit, eggs from Sarah's hens and the most delicious home baked brownies. All of these added extra were a total surprise and a welcome treat. We loved everything about the house and highly recommend it, the bed was heavenly and comfortable and the garden the perfect space which our dog loved too.

East Anglia is remote, but this is an area which was considered remote even in medieval times. The area was one of England's historic wildernesses, the Brecks, and has always been dependent on farming. But now, breweries are taking over abandoned barns, local vineyards win international awards, and Fox Cottage has been transformed from a humble cottage into a welcoming retreat for visitors.

The neighbourhood

The cottage is in a row of other houses set in open countryside, with the famous Wortham Ling just a few yards below. The Ling is like a rough village green but covers a massive 34 acres and is one of the only remaining examples of the medieval Brecklands which covered north Suffolk and south Norfolk. It's a perfect wild area for walking dogs, with gnarled trees, open spaces, pathways and ponds.

Local points of interest from Sarah Pattison

  • Fox Cottage is a timber framed cottage which we rescued in 2017. We restored it using traditional materials and added a smart kitchen diner extension so now you can enjoy the snuggly feeling of a small cottage with all
  • Fox Cottage is situated on the edge of a beautiful SSSI - Wortham Ling. It’s an area of heathland with heathers, gorse and thousands of rabbits! You can explore the footpaths behind the cottage which lead you through water meadows to the village church.
  • Fox Cottage May feel remote but it’s actually only 1 mile to the very beautiful medieval market town of Diss where you’ll find independent shops and cafes, an art centre (Corn Hall) incredible auction house (TW Gaze)
  • The cottage is perfectly situated to explore East Anglia. S
