Mendham Mill

Harleston, Norfolk

Four holiday homes for couples, families or friends in a stunning setting by the water - boat or fish from the garden

4 places

Sleeping from 2 – 8

Swans glide, pike wriggle, kingfishers swoop. Join them in a row boat or punt – or gaze from the bedroom at the Waveney’s calm waters. History flows over the now-silent workings of this watermill, and the grounds are an artist’s dream; Sir Alfred Munnings grew up here and painted amid the water meadows. The dazzling white Miller’s House stands with three other holiday cottages (for smaller groups or couples) and the owners’ house. Swoop up the gravel drive and enter a big comfortable living space with two four-seater sofas, a round hand-made table, pretty fabrics at sash windows and delicate art from Japan. In bedrooms (two up, two down), beds are quirkily angled, colours fuse, lamps glow. Take a slice of welcome cake into the parasol-shaded courtyard, fire up the barbecue; beyond the gate, picnic tables pose in picturesque corners. Beyond that coastal Southwold, Norwich Cathedral, boating on the Broads, a restaurant in the village pub. Wrote Munnings: “I shall always long for the river and the warblers’ song going on and on, and now and then the wind through the willows…” A very lovely spot.

We have stayed at Mendham Mill regularly over the past few years and it never fails to delight. James and Nick are great hosts and the property is absolutely beautiful.
