The Experience

Through the stable archway to a perfectly renovated cottage on a private estate, where Colefax & Fowler bedroom curtains reveal the owners’ style, and the wildlife artwork their passion. Living in the Hall down the drive, Anna and Edward are the founders of a vast wildlife reserve. Here, mountain bongo, blackbuck and water buffalo roam the other side of the wall – and exclusive use of their electric buggies and a private tour of the reserve is even included in your stay.

Enjoy your hamper of Norfolk produce, and breakfast and birdsong in your garden. The cottage is as peaceful as can be, yet civilisation is a five-minute stroll: a good little village store, and a fine pub called The Angel. Spread your wings to the glorious cathedral of Ely, or Houghton Hall & Gardens, once the home of Walpole (both 25 miles).

Return to books, board games and suppers from the Aga, and lovely serene bedrooms upstairs and down.

Reviews

The most magical cottage. Tucked away, you feel like you have stepped away from the rush of everyday, into another world. A world of peace and tranquillity. The cottage is full of light during the day and so very cosy at night. The garden is to be admired, romantic and beautiful. We enjoyed BBQs, played tennis, cricket, hide-&-seek and three generations got carried away on a Easter egg hunt. The happiest of times!

Great property, beautiful grounds and amazing wildlife reserve, have already booked to stay again

Chris, Leigh-on-Sea

We enjoyed our second holiday in this beautiful house. Spotlessly clean, very well equipped and masses of room inside and out suitable for all our guests from 2 years old to 100 year old. The garden is a joy and it is delightful and educational to see many different types of deer over the garden gate. We thought it a brilliant idea to be able to use the safari buggy when we wanted. The safari itself was so interesting and all the staff were helpful and friendly. I have no hesitation in recommending Stable Cottage and Watatunga they are both superb.

Set within the beautiful Watlington Estate, The Stable Cottage would be the perfect place for a intergenerational family getaway! Come to enjoy the spacious property, gorgeous walled garden and countryside beyond.

Nicole, Sawday's Inspector

We had a wonderful week at Stable Cottage. The house is lovely, decorated to a very high standard and spacious. The large walled private garden is beautiful and our children loved exploring and we all made good use of the tennis court. The house is in the grounds of the estate and is very peaceful yet with very good access and close to local shops and pubs. A safari tour of the Watatunga Estate was included and we saw a wonderful variety of deer, antelope and birds, mostly native of Africa. Our boys all fell in love with a small deer called Pip. We have since stayed again several times!

Location

The neighbourhood

Watlington is a stroll away, yet the estate contains woodland, lake and grassy savannah, home to some of the world's forgotten species. Play tennis or go on country walks nearby; Shouldham Warren is 5 miles; Sandringham Royal Park is 12. Close too are Norfolk's bird-filled lagoons and vast beaches (the owners know all the best places). Don't miss St George's Guildhall (NT), a rare moated house with gardens (7 miles), or Gooderstone Water Gardens.

Local points of interest from Anna Hamilton & Edward Pope

  • The Stable Cottage is part of Watatunga Wildlife Reserve and as our guests you will have a free private tour and exclusive use of an electric self-drive buggy to visit the reserve throughout your stay.
  • You're a 20 minute drive from Sandringham estate. The house and gardens are fascinating but if you don't have time for the full tour, it is still worth visiting for the beautiful parkland in which you're free to walk and the children's play area.
  • Fancy a day on the sea? The Coastal Exploration Company run fantastic day or half-day trips. Foraging in the salt marshes, letting the tide sweep you from Holkham to Wells, their tours run in wooden sailing boats and are first rate - especially lunch!
  • The best of Norfolk's beaches are within a 45 minute drive and we'll happily let you in on our favourite spots! Between us and the coast are some fabuous restaurants and delicatessens to break up the return journey.
  • We're right next to a bushcraft school, Inside Out, so why not check the kids in for a summer course that will blow their minds and yours. Lighting fires, sleeping outside and cooking all their own food, they really will learn so much
  • If you're after culture, we're 20 minutes from Ely and its stunning cathedral and Cambridge is just another hop down the train line. Alternatively, Norwich to the east bustles with fantastic new places to eat and shop and well worth a day trip.
