The Experience

A Georgian farmhouse snoozing in the Meldon Park Estate with gardens, paddocks, a little orchard and woods around it. Step inside to a thoroughly relaxing home and feel like the cat that got the cream. Everything shines – antique and modern furniture, the polished wood floors, big bunches of flowers, the fine linen on handmade mattresses.

Guests stay in their own part of the house: four bedrooms (one downstairs) with sofa or armchairs, an airy sitting room and a large dining hall with a log-burner. Judy lives at the other end and she makes whatever you feel like for breakfast – there’s an assortment of cereals, fruit, yogurt and different breads followed by either a full cooked, or perhaps smoked salmon and scrambled egg or avocado topped with a poached egg.

Take a glass of wine outside on a summer’s evening and listen to the birdsong and murmurings from sheep, cows and horses. Then it’s only a 15-minute walk to a pub for supper.

The neighbourhood

You're in the countryside five miles from Morpeth, a lively market town. The nearest pub for food is the Dyke Neuk, a mile away in Meldon; or try The Beresford Arms, Whalton, about four. Visiting all the castles and historic houses, walking, birdwatching, having a day out in Newcastle (15 miles) will keep you busy for days. Warkworth, Bamburgh and long beaches are a bit further.

Local points of interest from Judy Powney

  • Some lovely National Trust properties nearby, including Cragside house and gardens near Rothbury (30-minute drive) and nearby Wallington Hall with cycle trail and walled gardens (10 minutes)
  • Shooting enthusiasts have plenty of options, including Bywell shooting grounds (20-minute drive) for clay pigeon shooting
  • You can reach the Northumberland Coast AONB in half an hour; visit Bamburgh in the north and Alnwick market town - Harry Potter fans will love a day trip to Alnwick Castle, where much of the movies were filmed
  • Take the train to Newcastle in 20 minutes for days out - free parking at the train station

Judy Powney

Judy has enjoyed every step of creating Rural House. She’d been planning it for a long time, and she feels that all the things that she loves - interior design, gardening, being the host to family and friends and cooking - have been rolled up into one highly enjoyable job. She hopes guests love it as much as she does.
