The Experience
Drive down a tiny lane, past a lake and then the village church, and you’ll find The Stable in the grounds of Caroline and Dan’s Queen Anne House. If they’re not in their house in France they’ll be on hand to greet you with their two dogs and show you around, and will leave a welcome pack that always includes a bottle of wine.
Flop down on comfy sofas by the fire in the sitting room and read up on English Civil War history, or sit out on your private terrace looking out at the manor house and landscaped lawns. From the orchard, there are fabulous views of the Cherwell Valley in which you can join many circular walks.
There’s a feeling of peace here, but not complete isolation: the nearest pub and shop is a pleasant 45-minute stroll, and there are plenty of other pubs within three miles. Banbury is 15-20 minutes’ drive away, Stratford-upon-Avon is 45 minutes.

After such a difficult year we needed a place to escape and relax and The Stables at Manor House Farm was just perfect! The location felt a world away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives and from the moment we turned onto the country lane approaching the property we knew we were somewhere special….the fresh air, gorgeous open views and the peace and quiet all combined to make a very memorable holiday. The property itself was breathtaking, it has lots of character, complemented by carefully chosen decor and furnishings, it was also very well equipped - a real home from home!

We needed to escape for a couple of weeks and Stable Cottage fitted the bill perfectly. Supremely well equipped for a short stay, it was very comfortable and had been immaculately prepared - probably the best holiday cottage in which we have ever stayed. Good al fresco dining area too and enjoyable towpath walks along the canal from Claydon and Cropredy.

We stayed at Stable Cottage in chilly late November, but found the cottage to be warm and cosy with efficient underfloor heating. The cottage is gated, private and peaceful. You can hear the occasional train, but this is not disruptive. The cottage is equipped as if it is for permanent residence - every piece of kitchen equipment and crockery/cutlery that you can imagine is provided. There are a good selection of kitchen staples for your use (herbs, spices, tea, coffee, sugar, flour etc etc), plus bread, milk and wine. Perfect place for a relaxing and peaceful 2 days. Thank you!

Location
The neighbourhood
The cottage is in the small village of Claydon, just outside Banbury; Londoners could get here in under two hours on a good run. There’s fishing on the lake down the road, and inexpensive golfing. To stock up, the nearest shops are in Cropredy, a five-minute drive; there’s also a pub, The Brasenose Arms. The National Trust property Farnborough Hall is 1.5 miles away and for a day out, Compton Verney – 120 acres of parkland with an art gallery and café, is a 20-minute drive.
Local points of interest from Caroline Whitehead
- Stable cottage, newly converted on one floor, is next door to a Manor house at the edge of the village. There are many historic landmarks especially those associated with the Civil War from Edge Hill to Cropredy Bridge. National Trust houses abound.
- Only 7 miles from Banbury and its twice-weekly market. Golf courses within 10 mins of the house, coarse fishing and rolling farmland for walking dogs and hiking. Bicester village is 30 mins. by car and Fairport Convention in August, in the next village.
- Amongst the many local pubs in the area, The Kitchen at Farnborough, just over a mile away is excellent and is easily walkable. They take dogs in the bar. A list is left in a folder in the house. Local takeaways include Indian, Chinese and Pizza.
- Banbury has an indoor pool at the Spiceball centre and another outdoor one for the summer. There is an excellent farm shop at Wickham Park Farm with its own meat and deli and another at Edge Hill, apart from all the major supermarkets including Waitrose!
- Chiltern Railways service from Marylebone to Banbury is less than an hour with plenty of taxis. The cottage is 15 mins. from the station with parking for the early birds. Easy to commute if work demands.
- Stratford and its theatres, Leamington Spa and Warwick with its famous castle make a wonderful day out for adults and children alike are only 30 mins. by car and Silverstone about the same.

Introducing
Caroline Whitehead
Caroline and Dan ran a restaurant – Dan's – in Chelsea for 26 years and they have some wonderful stories. Dan is ex-City but incredibly practical with his hands and Caroline has a flair for interiors. Both are very interesting and lively people and are great at hospitality. They live between France and the UK.
A very comfortable cottage in a beautiful, peaceful string. Pleasant local walks and helpful hosts.
