Hop on the train at Paddington for the Bull. The old pub sits on Sheep Street and ticks all the right boxes for lovers of Cotswolds’ inns: great food, great service, gorgeous interiors. But it’s the homely feel that pulls it into a class of its own. Warm up by log fires with a Bloody Mary (house speciality) or a pint of Fullers. The wine list is short and includes some great finds… Charlie (young, friendly, charming) recently ran a vineyard in France. Find kilim rugs on seagrass floors, white limed beams and rustic walls, a sparkling little bar with zinc tops, and wood panelling painted a Georgian slate blue. Everyone’s welcome including kids and dogs, and the menu is short and delightful: baked gnocchi with mozzarella; battered whiting and chips; Pie of the Day with winter greens; chocolate sundae. The burgers (from local beef) are amazing. Upstairs are four bedrooms – with four more in the barn – modern in feel, laid-back yet luxurious: white bathrooms, wonderful wallpapers, seagrass floors, vintage chests of drawers.
