The Experience

Start the evening with a local, seasonal, hedgerow cocktail – try a crab-apple bellini. Move onto dinner: the menu changes each day. All the produce is lovingly sourced – eggs from the hens, veg from the garden, local meat and fish – then cooked with passion by Head Chef Luke Holland and his team.

Set off for Stamford (ten miles), a town rich in history, notable for its medieval Sheep Market, All Saints Church (climb the bell-tower), and numerous side streets to get lost down. The town’s prosperity is linked still to Burghley House, the finest Elizabethan house in England. Take a pub picnic to its lawns.

As for the pub, it’s 400 years old and an absolute gem. It stands at the end of a tree-lined avenue, next to a beautiful stone barn (the pub’s dining room). Bedrooms lie in Beech House across the lane, three with private terraces. Everyone’s welcome, from children to dogs.

Reviews

We feel like we're visiting friends when we come and stay at the Olive Branch. The food in the restaurant is first class and the rooms in Beech House are both stylish and comfortable.

Lyn, Stanton St John

The feeling here is of relaxed quiet efficiency and attention to detail from a young and enthusiastic team. The most delicious breakfast I have had anywhere and lovely suppers with enormous attention to well sourced ingredients. Some accomodation is clearly being touched up in advance of the spring season - our room was very pretty and again great attention to detail with lovely linen and bathroom accessories and a bit of extra space in the shape of a little dressing room with a day bed which makes the room charge really good value. Not a whiff of pretentiousness here - gets our vote.

Jayne, TURRIFF

Great place to stay and eat - very welcoming and attentive staff. The room had all the extra touches necessary as well as a very comfortable bed, good linen and a great bathroom. Dinner was excellent and the bar had a good selection of interesting drinks as well as plenty of seating space.

Location

The neighbourhood

This inn sits in a sleepy Rutland village surrounded by unspoiled countryside. You’re 20 minutes from the market town of Stamford, and the glorious history and gardens of Burghley House; events include the horse trials in September. At Tolethorpe (9 miles) there’s a Shakespeare Season every summer. Rutland Water (8 miles) has walks, boats, birds and absolutely everything for families.

Local points of interest from Ben Jones & Sean Hope

  • Castles and country houses within 30 mins, including Elizabethan Burghley House with acres of beautiful parkland, sculpture gardens and a Garden of Surprises are perfect for a summer’s day picnic with one of our hampers.
  • Walking, cycling, sailing, golf, horse-riding… dozens of chances to get active, at Rutland Water, Belvoir Castle, Deene Park, Rockingham Castle, Twin Lakes adventure park, Sacrewell Farm, Nene Valley Railway and Rutland Owl & Falconry Centre.
  • We’re surrounded by some of England’s prettiest market towns. Nearby Stamford, film location for Pride and Prejudice, is a treasure trove of cobbled streets, churches, real ale pubs and wonderful independent traders.
  • Ask about cookery demos, kitchen masterclasses, wine tasting events & wine dinners!
  • There are bicycles for our guests to borrow and picnic with, and walking and cycling routes (for off road and on road).
  • Take a look at our new paddock with chickens, ducks (goats coming soon!), polytunnel and veg and herb gardens.

Introducing

Ben Jones & Sean Hope

Ben Jones, Sean Hope (chef) and Marcus Welford bought The Olive Branch and Beech House in 1999 and turned a bunch of ruined cottages into an award-winning inn. Ben's father is an antiques dealer who supplied the furniture for the bedrooms in Beech House, while Louise, the manager, runs a happy ship: the staff are attentive, friendly, knowledgeable and keen.
