The Experience

Wake to the music of birdsong and river – all you’ll hear in your tiny nest by the River Unk. The Birches Mill and its buildings date back to 1640, and corn was ground here right up until the Second World War. Artists, Gill and Andrew live opposite this neat conversion where, under low ceilings, kitchen, living and dining areas blend into one: painted terracotta floorboards, beautiful beams, red squishy sofa, cast-iron wood-burner, windows made by a local craftsman to the original design. The kitchen area is small, impeccable: handmade wooden units with old brass fittings are painted duck-egg-blue, topped with quarry tiles; there are plenty of utensils and you can order a welcome hamper if you wish. Climb the coir-carpeted stair to your skylit bedroom with views, where pine bed and dressing table have a well-loved patina; step out of the chunky front door into picture-perfect, deepest Shropshire. There’s a small and shaded patio or a light paved terrace above, footpaths leading to Offa’s Dyke one mile away. Forts, farmers’ markets and castles wait to be explored.

We had a wonderful stay in Mill Stream cottage, and would certainly return in the future. The cottage is in a beautiful and secluded spot, with fantastic walking routes from the doorstep. There a some great local pubs and towns/ villages such as Bishop's Castle, which is picturesque and very pleasant to explore. The cottage is cosy and tastefully furnished, with all the kitchen equipment you would need for a long or short stay. The log burner was a welcome addition during our winter stay, though the cottage itself stayed warm. Gill and Andrew were very friendly and easily contactable.

Alex, London

We spent a very enjoyable few days in Mill Stream Cottage. The cottage is cosy, very tastefully renovated and well appointed. Gill and Andy has also given attention to safety during Covid 19. The area is a very beautiful and peaceful part of Shropshire with lovely walks. It was a real uplift.

Janet, Leighton Buzzard

Mill Stream Cottage is a lovely place to stay - well equipped and in a very quiet location. Everything you could possibly require is provided and there is a large amount of storage space. One of the highlight was being able to have some meals provided by Andrew & Gill, which allows you to eat lovely food cooked by someone else without having to drive anywhere! We spent a week doing great walks, including one from the house. Recommend Stiperstones and Long Mynd for walks and Clun for its castle (free) and tea shops.

What a refreshing way to finally venture out of Lockdown! This is a real find - a cosy, secluded cottage in a peaceful spot. Gill and Andrew made us feel so welcome. Everything was perfect - comfortable bed, great shower and everything provided to enable a comfortable self-catering stay. We enjoyed exploring and walking in the beautiful countryside. There is a small supermarket in nearby Clun for topping up supplies.

Kate, Chelmsford

We stayed here for a long weekend for our 3rd anniversary. Gill and Andrew are lovely people and provided us with the breakfast basket with a plant based milk due to my partner being lactose intolerant. Considering the unique situation (COVID 19), it was a pleasant getaway and change of scene. We made use of the outdoor furniture and were more isolated than we would have been at home! On the closure of all restaurants, our anniversary meal was cancelled. We had Vegetable Thali which was lovely along with a delicious fruit crumble. Hopefully we'll return under better circumstances :)

Tom, Birmingham

We spent a very relaxing few days in this cosy and comfortable cottage. The cottage is very well equipped, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The location is perfect for a peaceful break, with good walks on the doorstep. Andy and Gill were excellent hosts - friendly and helpful but respectful of our privacy. We sampled some of their homemade food whilst we were there - the vegetarian lasagne was delicious! We would recommend Mill Stream Cottage unreservedly!

Mark, Sheffield

Lovely place. Walks from the front door including Offa's Dyke. Easy reach for the Long Mynd, the Stiperstones and tea and cake at The Bog. Very helpful information about the area from Gill and Andrew. Excellent range of delicious food to order from them.

Rachel, London

Lovely place - just as described on this website. We had a restful weekend & appreciated the tranquility, and the beautiful little touches at Birches Mill, starting with the warm welcome from Gill. We walked to Clun, and also out towards Offa’s Dyke, and the cottage made for a good and comfortable base. The visitors’ book was full of comments from other happy visitors, many of them referring to the excellent home cooked meals which are available to pre-order.

Helena, Gloucestershire

Seriously mellow, restful and cosy. The quietest place we've ever stayed in. Excellent location for lots of splendid walks - the Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge, Offa's Dyke - and good walks direct from the house, in all directions. Gill and Andrew friendly and helpful.

Michael, Newark

If you want peace, self-reflection, comfort, history and plenty of local rambles plus a couple who relate to their visitors, here you will find it. Properly equipped with a decent garden to potter around in or sit and ruminate as you share a bottle or two on the patio. With Andrew serving food on your first evening, if you wish, and other times to order, and brought to the door then you are well-blessed. Great value. Totally the way to enjoy the countryside.

Pat, Delamere, Northwich Cheshire

We had an idyllic stay here for our short honeymoon. Mill Stream Cottage is charming, full of character and boasting all one could need in terms of amenities. We especially enjoyed the home-cooked meal which was waiting for us on our arrival, and whilst Gill and Andrew were happy to help with any requests, we enjoyed complete privacy. The setting is tranquil and blissfully rural - perfect for long walks or just sitting outside enjoying the views. A very special place to visit; many thanks to our hosts.

Brigitte, Chalfont St Giles

We had a lovely time in Gill & Andrew's cottage. Lovely hosts & fantastic location. A great adventure from start to finish. Anyone looking for a quiet beautiful spot to stay, look no further!!

James, Shrewsbury

A lovely, cosy little cottage in beautiful countryside. Perfect for a relaxing break. Everything you could require is provided and the facility to arrange for a breakfast basket and 3-course, home-cooked evening meal was a rather welcome special feature. Gill and Andrew are very friendly and welcoming hosts who made us feel at home in their charming cottage and have a wealth of local knowledge which we found extremely helpful.

Rowena, Worcester

A lovely cottage in a very peaceful setting. Gill and Andrew were so pleasant and helpful. There's lot's of great walking in the glorious countryside as well as many other activities. The cottage is well-appointed and private and there is a ready supply of great, fresh food provided by Gill.

Jo, Midhurst

A warm welcome awaited us at this gorgeous cottage in an idyllic setting overseen by excellent hosts, Gill and Andrew who were friendly and helpful but not intrusive. They also provide superb meals (pre-ordered), using home grown ingredients where possible and jams/preserves and freshly laid eggs from their chickens. The 'breakfast basket' is also a worthwhile purchase for your morning start. Clean, cosy and quiet (just birdsong and sheep - lovely) the cottage is an ideal place to stay whilst enjoying all that Shropshire has to offer or just an ideal place to stay!

Malcolm, Lowestoft, Suffolk

Hosts friendly and very welcoming.Cottage very clean and cosy in a very picturesque area. Enjoyed the quiet, all we could hear were birds and sheep. Can highly recommend the meals supplied by Gill .

Sandy, Birmingham

Wonderfully peaceful, lovely hosts, beautiful cottage, great walking - It was quite magical to lie in bed and see the moon and stars through the skylight.

Rebecca, Near Bath

Cosy secluded cottage with a wood burning stove and night storage heaters and everything you need for a comfortable stay. Plenty of information and maps of the area with walks from the cottage for the energetic. Andrew & Gill are discreet but always available if needed. Lots of wildlife in the nearby fields and plenty to see on days out. In particular Ironbridge and it's wealth of museums and Powis Castle (NT). Gill's 'Handbook' gives a huge amount of information particularly the local pubs but her home cooked meals are excellent if you don't want to venture out. We hope to return.

Simon, Brenchley, kent

We stayed at Mill Stream Cottage for six nights in what was a very cold time of the year. However we had a warm welcome from the Proprietor and plenty of logs to keep the wood burner going. The cottage is charming, immaculate, cosy and extremely well equipped. We couldn't fault it. Gill Farmer has great flair and the meal that we ordered was simply wonderful. The location is quiet and magical. As AS's website says, it's ideal walking country and well located for historic towns such as Ludlow and Church Stretton, but in the end we just stayed put and enjoyed the place. We'll be back.

John, Chesham

We loved the cozy, well-appointed cottage offering everything we could wish for. Had some great walks and visited local pubs. Recommended for a quiet get-away for two!
