The Experience

A wonderful place for a holiday, with plenty of space for everybody. The big house, built for Clive of India, sits comfortably at the bottom of a long winding drive and the holiday homes radiate out from it: Berkeley, Plassey and Garden Flat are all warm and comfortable with original pictures and furniture, oodles of interesting books and generous free logs. Clive and Harold, tucked into a corner of the old brick stable yard, are cosy boltholes with pretty fabrics, colourful rugs and neat-as-a-pin kitchens. Groups take both. Garden House stands on its own with a private lawn in front and a south-facing terrace at the rear. All the downstairs rooms have large windows allowing light to pour in, underfloor heating keeps you cosy, the kitchen is large and the sitting room has a wood-burner. You have the estate to stroll through, mature trees to admire, and if there is no wedding taking place, the arboretum and garden to wander at will – you can fish in the small pools too. Book a tour around the house if you’re a party of 16. A slice of history in this lovely part of the world: head off on a borrowed bike to discover all its treasures.

I stayed in the Green Glory wagon with my dog. It was a magical experience to be in the middle of an arboretum overlooking Long Mynd. Staff were friendly and regularly delivered new logs for the firepit. Wagons, caravans, yurts etc are well spaced out to ensure peace and privacy. Beautiful walks onsite, also an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area when you can bear to leave!

What an amazing place to spend a couple of days with friends celebrating a special birthday! We’ve loved exploring the gardens, seeing the Spring crocuses, snowdrops and daffodils, listening to the birds in the early mornings, stargazing…so many treasures! Thank you.

Thank you Walcot! We’ve enjoyed a wonderful few days of strolling in your magical arboretum and exploring the woods. Memories of the glowing berried holly trees, carpets of crisp brown leaves under frost, peacocks roosting in the tall tree by our French windows (and their first flight early in the morning, swift and silent to the walled garden), an alley of chestnut woods beyond a secret iron gate and the magnificent tallest Douglas Fir in the UK. These memories will keep us going until we return, hopefully very soon! Plassey is lovely. Photographs don’t do it justice, we could stay forever!

We came here for a wedding on the Saturday and decided to stay for a week. We have loved the gardens and boating lakes, and enjoyed seeing some of the local places, especially Cardingmill Valley and Stokesay Castle. We have also been very grateful for how cool this house is in the hot weather! Thanks for a lovely stay…

Local points of interest from Caitlin Hoare

  • Clive and Harold are located next door to each other so you can either book them individually or together to make a group of 10. Both have small gardens so you can dine al fresco!
  • Eclectically furnished, these apartments, like all on the Walcot Hall estate house an array of interesting antiques and homely furnishings.
  • Take a stroll around the arboretum or down the winding drive to the Powis Arms public house for a refreshing pint of local beer.
  • All self catering accommodation and glamping is dog friendly on the Walcot Estate, and so is the onsite pub, The Powis Arms!
