The approach along the Redlake Valley is glorious. Squire Farm is halfway up the side of the valley; views stretch across to woodland and above is a big hill fort, bracken and buzzards… Squire and Xidong Cottages are converted stone outbuildings close to but not on top of the farmhouse. Expect an eastern elegance inside Xidong (‘Rising Sun’): low level furniture is hand-crafted from oak in a living room open to the eaves, there’s a huge sofa, warm floors and a wood-burner to keep things toasty; the mezzanine bedroom is snug under sloping ceilings. Triple doors open to an oriental garden – with a fishpond, hot tub and terraces. Squire Cottage is more traditional, with old beams, oak floors, low doorways (mind your head!) and a rustic charm; there’s an inglenook to sit and chat by; bedrooms are colourful and quirky. Both cottages have top notch kitchens, books, TVs and space for extra friends. Cats, dogs and hens wander; Becky gives you freshly laid eggs on arrival as well as milk, butter and homemade bread. The area is rich for exploring, walking, mountain biking – if you’re lucky you’ll spot herons; children will love the stream and meadows.
