The Experience

Such a pretty house! The feel is spacious, light, homely and elegant all at once. Views soar from the drawing room up the hill to Butleigh Wood, double doors lead to the dining room, a playroom has sofas, games, toys and a telly, the kitchen has all the kit you need and another table for chatting and informal breakfasts. A walk-in larder is stuffed with all the basics, just replace what you finish. When it’s warm you’ll loll in a wicker chair on the vine-covered veranda, feeling very French.

It’s quite safe to let children go free range in the garden. They’ll discover a wooden playhouse with an exciting secret tunnel, a bridge over to a big field and a sunken trampoline in the grass. You can play tennis on the grass court – racquets and balls are in the utility room where you’ll find extra coats and wellies and a drying rack.

Stride out for flat or hilly walks and cycles and there are grand nature trails through the woods above.

We spent a really lovely week at Etsome House, just on the outskirts of Somerton. Welcomed by Pip and Crunchie, the labrador, and presented with fresh flowers and home grown rhubarb. We loved the huge space the house gave us, a lovely well stocked kitchen to cook in, and wonderful sitting rooms to come back to after a day out. The house is beautifully decorated and very well looked after, and the garden is wonderful for the children and the dogs. Somerset is fabulous for walking and visiting and has some fantastic restaurants. A restorative week! Thank you Pip.

Kate, London

We had an absolutely PERFECT holiday in Pip's gorgeous home. What a treat. Three families (6 adults & 5 kiddies) fit just perfectly in this spacious, yet warm and cosy house! Everything we needed was there, it is the ideal family getaway spot, truly. We spent hours playing tennis, cooking in the lovely kitchen, hiking, shrieking in delight at surprise peacock visits, eating fresh apples from the orchard, bouncing on the trampoline and playing catch with Crunchie, the sweetest gentlest best behaved doggie. We didn't even end up exploring the area much as the house itself was so entertaining!

Nora, London

Great house and grounds! We enjoyed the easy access to walking paths and lots of time on the grass tennis court. The house provides plenty of space to hang out together and plenty of spots to sit quietly and read. The kitchen is very well equipped and cozy. Would definitely recommend!!

Betsy, London

Lovely cottage stay where hosts are friendly and attentive should anything be needed. We found all amenities that are needed plus more that are needed within a property for a short stay but location is still convenient distance to shops and nearby attractions. Endless outdoor opportunities on the grounds for family gatherings with nice addition of optional hot tub. Would stay again

Krishan, Manchester

Etsome house is an absolutely fantastic place which far exceeded our expectations. The house and grounds are even better than the photos suggest, and the owners are wonderful hosts who are close enough to be there should you need anything, but far enough away to let you get on with what you want to do. The house itself is impressively large & beautiful, with all of the amenities you could think of needing for a stay away, with heaps of space inside and out. The grass tennis court is wonderful, and location is ideal - being walkable to the local town and a short drive to some great local sights

Harley, London

Bowl down Somerset lanes to this lovely old house - a grand spot for the clans to get together and have fun. Children will be very happy larking about in the garden, parents can relax knowing they are safe from cars, cooking is a sociable affair with an extra table in the kitchen, there are hiding places for the curmudgeonly

The neighbourhood

You're right at the end of the bird-filled Levels. From the house you can walk up Lollover Hill for 360 degree views, walk to Admiral Hood Monument, or Dundon Beacon for a medieval fort. In Somerton, one mile, there's a baker, butcher, wine shop, health food shop (Cobbs) and restaurants. Buy lethal cider from Burrow Hill or visit Brown and Forrest smokery for the local speciality, smoked eel.

Local points of interest from Pip Scaramanga

  • A lovely 1 mile walk along a shaded footpath running due North takes you to Compton Dundon with its 11th Century church, 1700-year-old Yew Tree, Iron Age encampment and Roman fortified hill. Also Lollover Hill has a 360 degree view. Well worth the climb.
  • Fabulous local and gastro pubs, new super delicious restaurants all withing 30 minutes. Holm, (South Petherton). Osip, (Bruton) 28 The Market Place 9Somerton). The Clock Tower (Milborne Port) . Farm shops galore and wonderful Bakeries. Gastronomic Heaven.
  • If shopping is your thing Clarks Village, in 15 mins, Alice Temperley in Illminster . Bath and Bristol are all within easy reach together with a good selection of antique shops, local potterys and galleries.
  • Etsome House lies on the Eastern fringes of the Somerset Levels, an area of some 650 sq km renowned for its biodiversity, birdlife and unspoilt natural beauty. It is easily accessible from the door. Murmurations of starlings ,deer, hares, heron and swans.
  • Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford and the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton make for a great rainy day out for young and old alike, not that it ever rains in Somerset you understand! National Trust properties, Longleat ,Stourhead 40 mins away Lots to amuse
  • The Newt in Somerset near Castle Cary is the latest amazing garden to open in this part of the world. Hauser & Wirth is a renowned contemporary art gallery, restaurant and garden on the edge of the bizarrely fashionable town of Bruton.

Pip Scaramanga

Pip, a talented interior decorator, has worked all over the world and lived in France which is evident in her garden design. Andrew ran his own furniture business for many years, has renovated the annexe and is now working on the barn. They have a black lab called Crunchie who is fond of resting on the veranda so may pop in, and a peacock with no name who comes and goes as he pleases.
