The
Experience

This feels remote: a tiny hamlet in the wide-open spaces which are the levels; criss-crossed with ditches, humming with birds, packed with history, but you’re only a short hop from Wells or even Bath. Jane (a designer) and artist partner Simon have created a delightful gallery inside their 18th-century gentleman farmer’s house and much of what you see is for sale, from the art on the walls to some of the up-cycled funky furniture – even if you don’t buy anything you’ll come away filled with ideas for your own space. It’s a clever mix of old (flagstones rescued from Glastonbury Abbey during the dissolution of the monasteries)  and new (industrial lighting, rubber floors in the showers) which not many folk would attempt – never mind pull off perfectly. You’ll sleep like logs in bedrooms with no light pollution and no noisy traffic, there are heart-stopping views from most windows, a sweet little garden to potter in and plenty of room at the copper-topped big table for long, chattery meals – or a good pub a few doors down. Best of all, everywhere you look there is something worth looking at. Lovely.

Reviews

This was one of the most unique and interesting houses we have rented. Far from run of the mill like most. 3 good size bedrooms with the benefit of each having private bathrooms was handy with having 3 separate couples in our group. The road was quiet , in a tranquil setting, and the local pub whilst deceiving from the outside was brilliant once you walked through the door. Would recommend this house to anyone.

A thoroughly enjoyable visit. The accommodation was first class, and can recommend Godney Arts House. We were all made mot welcome.

We were looking for a property within easy reach of SW London that would be stylish for teenagers and comfortable for the “grown ups”! GAH fitted the bill and the house more than lived up to expectations. We made many lovely memories by following the house list of recommendations. Although we explored, we have come away with a list of further places that we want to see on our next visit and when that does happen I can’t imagine staying anywhere other than GAH. I can wholeheartedly recommend GAH and the reliable prebooking advice from the owners.

The most unique and beautiful house we've stayed in. The setting is gorgeous, completely peaceful but still about 50 steps away from a fantastically quirky pub/restaurant (no noise) and also within easy access to amenities, with loads of interesting activities in the area. The house itself is a work of art that is packed full of character and quirkiness, and every nook and cranny has a secret for kids and adults alike. It's so cosy, comfortable and spacious ticking every box. Hosts Jane and Simon are totally lovely and nothing is a problem. You just come away thinking "I wish we lived here!"

We had a wonderful stay in this stunning property - enjoying every minute! We are hoping that Jane & Simon's good taste has rubbed off on us, as we were certainly inspired by their exceptional interior design skills. And all so very comfortable too. Brilliant!! We loved our trips out to Wells, exploring the Bishop’s Palace, and visiting The Good Earth vegetarian cafe (twice). The nearby Wilkins Cider Farm was an experience, as was Hauser & Wirth art gallery - not to be missed. Then a very happy mooch around Frome’s arty attractions - all lovely. Thank you SO much! Local points of interest from Jane Peck

  • Turn right out of the house & stumble down the road for 2 minutes, The Sheppey Inn awaits you. Great food, eclectic music, local ales and ciders abound. Sit by the river drink in hand & watch an otter swim past or if you are quick a Kingfisher flash by.
  • Watch the mists settle at night in Autum & Winter as they roll over the silent fields quietly enveloping the surroundings then gaze up at the star studded sky. The silence can be deafening.
  • Godney is 8 minutes drive from Glastonbury where you can dip into a time warp of crushed velvet & tie dye. An amazing array of independant shops selling crystals, essentilal oils, food, incense, amulets, books & clothes. People watching can last for hours.
  • Explore Westhay National Nature Reserve 5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk, with vast reedbeds lakeland pools and wet wodlands, sit in the birdhides with a flask of coffee, catch the starling murmurations where 1000's of birds dance in the sky
  • Thre is no more authentic Somerset place than Roger Wilkins cider farm at Mudgley. Hang out with the locals, grab a glass of farmhouse cider and tuck into one of Roger's generous plowmans. We love Roger so much we named our cat after him.
  • We have fantastic Farmer's markets – Wells every Wednesday & Saturday, Glastonbury each Tuesday, Frome’s Independent Artisan market (1st Sunday April – December). Also the giant flea market at the Bath & West Showground & massive Sunday car boot at Cheddar
