The Experience

A touch of the country in town – a buzzing town too: Frome is bursting with culture, galleries, quirky shops and great markets, all a short walk away. Connected by an impressive architect-designed walkway to the owners’ house, but facing the other way so you’ll feel nicely private, this generous 19th-century coach house overlooks big gardens and a tennis court. Step in to a pristine open-plan space with sparkling lights and a superb oak floor. Sitting room, dining room and smart kitchen blend into one, there are guide books and maps to inspire you, a wood-burner, and logs from the garden to get you going. The Greens like to support local craftsmen and food producers and send you a useful pack of information to help you get the best out of your stay. Your bedroom above, a galleried sanctuary for two, comes with a compact shower and a lovely low window that pulls the outside in. Enjoy Frome’s farmers’ market (one of the best), cocktail and dinner at the Archangel in town, trot up Catherine Hill for vintage shopping. Beyond? Wells, Longleat, Stourhead, Bath, and Somerset’s sweet hills.

Reviews

A lovely property in the heart of Frome. Nicola's garden is just beautiful and I can imagine relaxing there and enjoying the nature. This place has a lot of tranquillity to it, and the house itself is well appointed and has everything you will possibly need. Available books and guides contain all the information on things to see and places to eat.

Marta, Sawday's Inspector

A lovely, comfortable and peaceful retreat within walking distance of Frome town centre, and the Saturday market. We only had time for a flying visit, it was handy for us going to a concert at Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon. We will be back for a longer stay next time.

Carol, Cambridge

The Coach House is a very comfortable, very quiet, well appointed house with easy access on foot to an interesting town full of diverting independent shops and excellent eateries. We had a very relaxing, quiet time in the Coach House and in Frome and will certainly think of returning one day.

Marian, Oxford

Thank you Nicola and Chris for another relaxing week at the coach house. We enjoyed walking around Witham Friary and visiting the historic Seymour Arms pub. Great to see young artists in Britain at the 'Present Tense' exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, and visit St Mary's Church. Bruton also a great place to walk. We can recommend The Talbot Inn at Mells, for a celebration and the Mells village cafe. Despite the wet weather, the wildlife in the garden has been fantastic - especially the great spotted woodpecker and nuthatch. Best of all the screaming foxes getting frisky on the lawn! Thank

After almost six weeks in the UK, we ended our trip here. We have stayed in many places in the UK and the US, and the coach house is the very best. The location is stunning and private. The house is flawlessly appointed with great attention to detail that is apparent in every room. The many windows and skylights bring in abundant light. We had lunch outside with apples pulled from the trees, and we listened to the caw of the jackdaws and were convinced that no one could feel stressed in the midst of all that calm and beauty. We are grateful to Nicola and Chris and can't wait to return.

Annie, Arcata, CA

Everything is perfect, thank you! I’m so glad I came. You have the most magical garden. I could look at it all day.

Carrie, London

Your coach house is just wonderful! We have had a lovely time.

Meryl, Cardiff

Tastefully designed. VERY clean. Charming hosts. Beautiful location.

Polly, Cardiff

If you're looking for a place to unwind, chill and relax Holmwood House will allow you to achieve this. Frome is also near some lovely places to visit without having to drive long distances. We enjoyed our visit to the beautiful city of Bath and Salisbury and the cathedral is well worth the trip.

Jill, Bristol

'As others have said, the coach house is a tastefully equipped, creative conversion and so a delightful place to stay. With restaurants and shops just ten minutes walk away, it's very convenient too. We were drawn by the EV charging point, as this was our first long drive in our new electric car. It was so nice to arrive, unload, plug in and then go out and eat. This is the future of staycations!'

Robert, Leiston

What a lovely place to stay! Such a peaceful spot in the arms of nature. From our window we watched a mother and baby fox playing in the meadow this morning. Frome market, what a hoot! Such a collection of characters and cake! Then back to our beautiful, tranquil hideaway. Thank you so much for your excellent hospitality.

Nick, Ampthill

We were so fortunate to find Holmwood Coach House, a beautiful self-catering cottage with every amenity possible. Nicola and Chris have thought of everything and the attention to detail is so evident. It was easy to find and so convenient to walk into town to enjoy what Frome has to offer. So many sites to see from this 'home base', and yet we felt so comfortable just taking a day off, putting up our feet and catching up with correspondence etc. Nicola and Chris have real gem here, and we heartily recommend their coach house to everyone. Thanks again Nicola and Chris

Geoff and Patti, Prince George

It just gets better every time we visit the Coach House. Here in crisp, sunny, deep frost. We’d recommend a trip to Avebury, fantastic walk across ancient landscape. Also, The Talbot Inn at Mells, and town trail from the walks folder. Wonderful to see red kites flying several times. Enjoyed great art at Hauser & Wirth too. Thank you Nicola and Chris for a lovely holiday. We’ll be back.

Rosalind, Stockport

“We have watched blackbirds, redwing, blue tits, great tits, a jay, several thrushes and two very fat wee squirrels enjoy the festive feast of crab apples: an entertainment in itself is that tree. Owls hoot at night. Despite being blighted by colds, we have loved the cosiness of the place and having spent longer indoors than we usually would it’s been great to be in a home from home. Enjoyed Hauser & Wirth Gallery; Wells and the Cathedral were pretty and impressive. On New Years Day, Frome was a pleasant town to wander in.

Heather, Berkhamsted

A very enjoyable stay in a lovely property. The Coach House is in an excellent location - quiet and peaceful, yet easy access into Frome centre. It's clear that a lot of thought has gone into making the guests' stay so enjoyable. Watching the foxes playing in the garden was a lovely way to end our holiday. High Pavement Restaurant highly recommended.

Alan, Tadcaster

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Frome. The Coach House was within easy walking distance of the centre of Frome and the Cheese and Grain which hosts some excellent concerts. The property is in a lovely shady spot - though it was too hot to use the tennis court this time

Tim, Great Longstone, Derbyshire

Dear Nicola and Chris, Once again thank you for a lovely stay at the Coach House. All your recommendations were very helpful to getting the very best out of the area. I will be back!

Sharon, Essex

A comfortable, well equipped and spotless property set in a pretty, peaceful location but walking distance from the centre of Frome. The owners have paid great attention to detail and provided comprehensive information about the property, location and amenities prior to our visit. This is an ideal base to return to after exploring the many interesting shops and charming villages in this pretty area of Somerset.

Alison, Callington

A delightful four days at Holmwood. Very comfortable accommodation and most welcoming hosts. Couldn’t ask for more.

Linda, London

A welcoming and cosy place to stay, within easy walking distance of the shops and restaurants of Frome. We had a lovely time at the Coach House - it has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is very well-equipped and there are lots of lovely farm shops nearby to pick up supplies. The location is great for visiting the many attractions in the area, and Frome has lots of lovely independent shops to explore. Nicola and Chris were very welcoming hosts and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Coach House.

  • Buy local produce at the Frome Farmers Market, by the Boyle Cross at the bottom of Cheap Street, second Saturday of each month; and take in the festive atmosphere at the Independent Market, first Sunday of the month, Mar-Dec, with music, food and crafts.
  • The Frome Festival is an annual 10 day celebration of the town’s unique arts scene held in July providing community events all over town and kicking off with the popular Food Feast offering a varied selection of food and drink stalls.
  • 4 miles from Frome is the village of Mells, scattered around Mells Manor, home to the Asquith family. In drier months you can walk via Vallis Vale and Great Elm, looking out for the ruins of Fussell’s Ironworks on the footpath between Mells and Great Elm.
  • Also 4 miles out of town is Longleat where your visit begins with a view of the grand stately home, one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture in Britain, set within 900 acres of ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped gardens and parkland.
  • 9 miles away is Stourhead landscape garden, peaceful and beautiful at any time of year but especially stunning when the trees are in their Autumn splendour. Follow the loop around the huge lake and you will stumble across classical and gothic buildings.
