Rugs on planked floors, churchyard and garden views, fine old furniture and pictures... a place of history, eccentricity and authenticity

Read guest comments

The great carpet invasion stopped short of this priory wing, arrested by the smell of polish on wooden floors. Through the vast oak door is a sitting room with oak-mullion windows, beams and bread oven. Your cottage is homely, rambling and of another age, packed with fine old furniture, rugs, books and pictures. Sofa and chairs are set against rich velvet curtains, there's a Victorian wood-burner in the huge hearth and all feels comfortably lived-in – this is not for seekers of pristine perfection. You eat in the kitchen at an oak refectory table, or barbecue in your own private courtyard, amid pots and urns bright with flowers. Bedrooms have rugs on wooden floors, and churchyard views; along the corridor, a pretty window seat looks over Jane's priory garden – medieval, enchanting and yours to wander. Jane, interesting, amusing and down to earth, lives in the Old Priory next door. You wake to peeling bells and the setting is just delightful, with Dunster a stroll away and Dunster Castle towering on its hill. Come in December for Dunster by Candlelight; in summer for Exmoor and the heritage coast. A unique stay.

Guest feedback
"A really wonderful place to stay. Peaceful with a unique atmosphere and no jarring modernisations to spoil your sense of stepping back in time. More a home than a self-catering cottage, Jane makes you feel very welcome and is a great part of your visit without being intrusive. The setting with the garden, Priory bells and Carillon are very special. More than worthy of the 20th Anniversary nomination for Special Place of the Year. "
