Rambling, beamed and flagstoned, Jane’s 12th-century home is as much a haven for reflection and good company today as it was to the monastic community who once lived here. Both house and hostess are unpretentious and friendly; Jane adds her own special artistic flair. Find Venetian-red walls in the low-ceilinged, time-worn living room with 14th-century fireplace, a deeply authentic four-poster bedroom with undulating oaken floor. Breakfasts are organic, local and very good: Alastair pronounced his, “one of the best breakfasts ever”! The bewitching walled garden perfectly complements her ancient home… a place of peace and a wonderfully personal creation. A bounteous blend of formal touches with shrubs, small trees and climbers allowed to express themselves freely. A tall mimosa greets you at the little gate on a lane overlooked by the Castle, mature espaliered fruit trees line the path and then Jane’s most formal touch, the square, knee-high hedged box garden. Informally planted herbaceous borders and a small lawn in front of the house complete the picture. Through an archway you can wander into the church grounds next door.

Jane was most welcoming, this is a wonderful house, full of character & great charm, a real gem. We enjoyed staying here very much, had a fantastic breakfast each day and felt very much at home & relaxed. Lovely large bedroom & en suite, every need catered for, even had fresh mulberries for our breakfast. The location was good, we would definitely stay here again.

Sonia, Chulmleigh

The first nights you hear the bells, afterwards you don't care at all. Jane made this B&B a very special place, she is extremely caring, relaxed, full of great tips what to do and where to go in Somerset and Devon. A beautiful place with a wonderful host.

Jane Forshaw

Jane’s domain is one where the modern world is mostly kept at bay. She’s no fan of computers and is dedicated to preserving the soul of the ancient Priory in as green a way as possible. Engaging and down-to-earth, she has an artist’s eye for what works: her garden is a flowering, climbing, tumbling, fruitful joy; interiors are equally seductive: antique and book-filled. She also loves animals (especially her two bulldogs), theatre and literature.
