The
Experience

The vicarage sits at the foot of Jack and Jill’s hill in a sleepy Mendip village. Both bedrooms have goose down comfort: one has an antique French bed and limestone wet room; the sunny blue room upstairs has a freestanding roll top. Your hosts are informal and friendly and their home exudes charm: a medieval stone floor in the hall, old flagstones, carpets designed by Lizzy, flowers, wood-burners and a pretty kitchen. Hens potter, carp laze in the canal pond; breakfast when you want on a full English, garden compotes and delicious coffee. National Trust gems and splendid walking on the Colliers Way will keep you busy.

Reviews

What a delightful and comfortable stay! Lizzie and Christopher were perfect hosts. They welcomed me into their gorgeous (and fascinating) home and nothing was too much trouble. The bedroom was spacious and the bed was comfy with very high quality bedding - one of the hallmarks of a classy establishment! Although the house is historic, the bathroom was modern and well designed with - hooray - excellent shower pressure. It was lovely to enjoy an excellent cooked breakfast while chatting to Lizzie and Christopher. All in all a lovely place - I cannot recommend The Old Vicarage highly enough!!!

We had a wonderful weekend at The Old Vicarage. Lizzy and Christopher are excellent hosts. We stayed in the Blue Room which was very tastefully furnished and comfortable with a wonderful bouquet of flowers picked from the stunning garden. The breakfast was a delight with Christopher’s homemade produce. We were fortunate to enjoy fine weather so we particularly enjoyed tea in the garden, accompanied by Mabel. It is well situated - we enjoyed strolling around Frome and the stunning walled garden at Mells, with excellent food in the Talbot Inn.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, from the minute we arrived until we left. Lizzy and Christopher made us feel at home and were very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble for them, they even lit the wood burner in our private sitting room just for us.The rooms were spotless and furnished with fabulous antiques and lovely interiors. We had great home made breakfasts with home made bread and preserves. Their local knowledge was invaluable, we are looking forward to a return visit. Thank you Lizzy and Chris.

This is, hands-down, the best B&B experience I've ever had. Before we arrived Lizzy shared lots of recommendations with us for places to eat and visit, indicating where necessary that we had to book in advance. When we arrived we were greeted with wine, smiles and shown to our beautiful suite - including a huge bedroom, private sitting room with TV and piano, and lovely modern bathroom. And that's all before we got to breakfast in the morning - such an array of fresh treats, teas, coffee and *just* the right size of English breakfast, cooked to a tee. We will be back!

Everything about The Old Vicarage was fantastic: we were welcomed after a long drive by a crackling log fire and glasses of wine, served in our own suite complete with piano; the bedroom was super cosy and there were lovely Cowshed products in the bathroom. The breakfast alone was worth the visit (homemade breads, homemade jams...). Hosts Chris and Lizzie were wonderfully warm and kind and full of interesting local knowledge. Couldn't recommend this place more highly.

We had a delightful stay with Lizzy and Christopher and their little dog Mabel. The Old Vicarage is lovely, both historic and welcoming - we had the large downstairs room with comfortable sitting room - perfect for us and our little daughter. The surroundings were peaceful, the breakfasts superb and our hosts very charming - highly recommend.

We stayed at The Old Vicarage for a summer staycation. We were met in the beautiful garden and shown to the Blue Room with a four poster bed and roll top bath. The room was well presented with a lovely view of the church. Tea and coffee making facilities were a nice touch. One of the highlights of our stay was the breakfast. The choice and quality of the food would put most 5* hotels to shame. Beautifully cooked English breakfast or crushed avocados on home made sourdough with poached eggs all served with their own honey and jams. The Old Vicarage is the perfect place to explore Somerset.

The Old Vicarage is stunning. The hosts were warm and welcoming. My room was wonderful with a roll top bath with a country view of the church. The four poster bed was very comfortable with high quality duvet, pillows and linens. Breakfast at The Old Vicarage was a real treat. Warm croissants with home made jams, yoghurt with berries and rhubarb from the garden followed by dishes like poached eggs with avocado, roasted figs and Halloumi or full English breakfast all served with home made sour dough bread. The only thing you are going to regret is that you didn’t book to stay longer!! Enjoy!

We loved our stay at the Old Vicarage! Christopher and Lizzie were so nice and accommodating, and this part of England was just beautiful. Our suite was stylish, clean and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious. The location was central for visiting Somerset. We loved it and hope to return. It was Sawday accommodation at its best!

We had a wonderful stay at The Old Vicarage. Lizzy and Christopher are amazing hosts! They take real care in making sure you have a comfortable stay. The room was massive, super clean and modern. We had a large private living area so we could relax. The breakfast is amazing!!! Christopher makes his own bread (both the sour dough and rye are delicious) and nothing is too much trouble for Lizzy. Overall a fantastic stay and we would highly recommend to friends and family.

We have just spent a weekend staying at The Old Vicarage and had a lovely time. Christopher & Lizzie were so friendly and made us feel very welcome in their home. The breakfast was to die for and we especially loved the homemade breads & preserves (lime marmalade in particular). The guest accommodation is beautifully presented with a separate area for relaxing after a day driving around the countryside. Step into the bathroom and you have a fully tiled wet room with very powerful shower. You couldn't ask for a nicer place to stay in this lovely part of the country!!!

Louise

We absolutely love staying with Lizzy and Christopher - they are such lovely hosts. We've been three times now and each time we leave, we plan our next visit! The rooms are beautiful, the breakfasts are divine (homemade bread and jams, honey from the bees in the garden, proper cappuccino - the list goes on...!) and the location really is idyllic. Can't wait to go back!

Such a lovely place to stay and the MOST wonderful breakfast I have ever eaten in a B&B - every item well sourced and perfectly cooked.! Fabulous French antique double bed. Beautiful rugs designed by owner and handmade in India.

The Old Vicarage is a lovely little gem, charming and has a enchanting sense of calm. Lizzie and Christopher are incredibly welcoming hosts; I stayed with my girlfriend over the New Year break and we asked for a later than usual breakfast and they only were happy to accommodate. Breakfast is a thing of joy! Local produce and homemade. Brimming with character, the rooms are beautiful, with lots of those little things that make all the difference. Great quality rooms and all spotlessly clean and welcoming. Overall, a 5 star experience. We can't wait to come back!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. Lizzy and her husband are so welcoming and friendly. They gave advice on places to visit, booked a restaurant for us, gave directions and let us use the room later than expected so that we could get ready for a wedding. The property itself and the village setting is charming. Our rooms (we had a lounge to ourselves as well as bedroom and en-suite) were clean, warm, spacious and well decorated. Breakfast was amazing and more choice than we imagined. Wouldn't hesitate to return! Thankyou!

Emma, Woking

A beautiful and homely place to stay. The most incredible breakfast, with home made bread, jams and honey made by friendly, relaxed and overly accommodating hosts. So comfortable we didnt want to get out of bed! Great pubs near by and Babington House Spa just a stones throw away. We will definitely be returning.

Ruby

Stayed for a wedding at Babington House. Would definitely stay again for the wonderful house, luxury room and hearty breakfast. Very warmly hosted during some very cold weather.

Alastair

There isn't really at category or box to tick to describe how wonderful Lizzy and Chris host their guests at The Old Vicarage. Its a combination of staying in a stylish modern B&B, an olde world English country cottage whilst having a home stay with your parents (without the arguments!) and also a weekend away with your oldest best friends. The beds are very comfortable, the shower is perfect with Cowshed products & the breakfasts are fab & its also only a 25 minute country walk away from Babington House which if you're a member you can "abuse" all the facilities without the expense.

Damian

Tranquil stay! Lizzy and Christopher made our short stay perfect. We arrived to collect eggs from the chickens, feed the fish and have a bounce on the trampoline, finishing off with a walk up the Jack and Jill hill. What a great start to the holiday, my little boy couldn't have hoped for a better way to stretch his legs. The room was huge with a great bathroom and a delightful connecting living room. LIzzy set us up each morning with a hearty breakfast before a trip to Longleat and our onward journey.

Introducing

Elizabeth Ashard

Lizzy and Christopher bought this house in the 90s while staying in the area with friends. They immediately felt at peace when they walked in, and since both were in demanding careers in London they felt this was their ideal bolthole. Lizzy had a career in TV design and now designs rugs which are made in Katmandu; ex-TV director Christopher is now a writer of historical novels mainly based in Africa where he taught as a young man.
