The Experience

The Stables, behind Maria and Mark’s lovely old house, look over fields with a little river running by. Step in to a great sitting/dining space with an arty feel. Maria is a dab hand at reclaiming market finds, painting designs on wall or fabric, creating a slice of natural, easy living – and baking the perfect apricot and choc chip biscuit! Find linen sofas, art and photos, TV with a rustic wooden shelf below of books, games, DVD player. The kitchen area is gleaming, the table cleverly revived with a zinc top and plenty of crocks for cooking. Bedrooms have well-dressed beds, hanging hooks or a painted wardrobe, hand-printed lamps, a deer hide perhaps; bathrooms come with local lavender soap made by the Matthews’ young daughter. The pool is free at set times – hop through the shower room door into a walled suntrap. Light floods in through tall windows and the newly planted crab apples framing the decked patio will be a blossomed espalier in a season or so. Paddle in the river, check out Maria’s guide to local artists, visit Frome with its brilliant market; Wells is a walk and Glastonbury a ten-minute drive.

The Stables has been tastefully converted, Maria has real flair and style. The accommodation is very comfortable and quiet. It is perfectly positioned for visiting Wells which is a short walk through the fields. Highly recommended!

Carol, Tunbridge Wells

The Stables has been such a wonderful home for a week to us – thanks a lot! The kids had so much fun in the pool and the meadow behind the house – a perfect compensation for having to go with their parents to visit all those beautiful National Trust estates.

Kerstin, Hamburg

Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely Stables. It’s a perfect stay every time. Eleanor, 8 years Fantastic stay again – so peaceful and calming. Everything we could need to make us feel at home (without the jobs!).

A wonderfully restful and calm home from home. The walk to Wells is delightful, and the Stables are very comfortable and full of light.

Helen, London

We visited as one of two couples with babies and had the most wonderful time. The Stables is beautifully decorated and is an incredibly calming place to stay. We spent hours relaxing on the deck and playing in the pool with the babies. The fire pit was an adult treat, as was the BBQ. The walk into Wells over the fields was very pretty. Wells itself is great, the farmers market and the Bishop's Palace were definite favourites. There's lots to do within easy reach in that part of Somerset. Everything is just so relaxing, which is what us adults needed! Maria was so helpful, approachable and kind

Verity, Oxford

Set in beautiful countryside and beautifully furnished with lovely light flooding in to the cosy bedrooms and living area; The Stables made a perfect base for our DIY yoga retreat weekend.

What a lovely, relaxing place to stay.. It's been decorated beautifully and it's an incredibly peaceful place. Wells is a great little city to explore and The Stables is the perfect base.

Local points of interest from Maria Matthews

  • Walk an easy 20 minute paved footpath to Wells' farmers market, every Wed and Wat, one of the best in the county. Buy lunch from the stalls then sit at pavement tables and watch the world go by.
  • Magnificent Wells Cathedral is possibly one of England's most beautiful - but then we are biased! Come to listen to the world class choir and marvel at the towering arches.
  • We are well placed as a base to visit several National Trust treasures including Montacute House, Lytes Carey Manor and my favourite, the exquisite palladian Stourhead House with its perfectly formed lake dotted with classical temples and mystical grottos.
  • The Frome Independent is a market like no other. On the first Sunday of the month from March till September its bustling stalls take over the town. Come for flea finds, artisan crafts and the yummiest local foods.
  • We are just 10 minutes from the Glastonbury Festival site. If camping simply fills you with horror, come and stay with us instead. We run a drop in service too, so you don't have to worry about driving there ( and it's a 10 min cab ride home)
  • If, like me, you like to visit reclamation yards, auction rooms and antique fairs, you have come to the right place. Nearby Bath and West Showground hosts the IACF Antique Markets and the now famous Shepton Flea throughout the year.
