The Experience

This cute little hotel in the middle of Woodbridge slopes downhill to the river, its rainbow of pastel colours making it a landmark in town. Inside, open-plan interiors flood with light courtesy of a glass ceiling. A Windermere skiff hangs above the bar, you find painted panelling, comfy sofas, slate floors and a wood-burner to keep things cosy. An airy restaurant comes in pale olive with leather banquettes, wooden floors and contemporary art, a fine spot for some tasty local food, perhaps seared scallops with Suffolk chorizo, slow braised pork with glazed carrots, white chocolate and passion fruit cheese cake. Breakfast is just as good; expect poached fruits, flagons of juice, smoked kippers, the best sausages in Suffolk. Bedrooms above vary in size, but all have the same feel: off-white colours, duck-down duvets, padded headboards, Hypnos beds. You’ll find panels of entwined willow, pitchforks hanging on the wall, robes and power showers in sparkling bathrooms. Don’t miss Sutton Hoo, the Aldeburgh food festival or Rendlesham Forest, the UK’s equivalent of Area 51.

Reviews

My wife and I stayed 1 night at the Crown and we were most impressed by helpful reception, room comfort, service & food. would unhesitatingly recommend it, and plan to return for a longer stay in the summer.
