The Experience

Step through a white gate, down the garden path and into the porch of your cottage; one in a neat row of whitewashed 19th-century dwellings. Downstairs there’s a fresh nautical feel: the cosy living room, dining area and well-stocked kitchen are all open plan. The spick and span family bathroom is down here too. Upstairs to three bedrooms: a double with sea views and two twins.

Take your coffee outside to the terrace while you plan your day – perhaps a yomp through miles of rolling Sussex landscape, a jaunt to boaty Chichester or a wander down to wonderful West Wittering beach, a ten-minute walk, for some twitching: swifts and swallows in spring, oyster catchers and geese in autumn.

You’re left a generous pile of logs for the open fire, a TV and plenty of books and board games. There’s a shed in the garden bursting with outdoorsy things: bikes, body boards, buckets, spades and crabbing nets; and an outdoor shower for sandy toes.

Reviews

Beautiful cosy cottage in the perfect location, perfect for birdwatching and coastal walking. The cottage has everything we needed to make a wonderful stay. Highly recommend and will return soon.

Louise, Woking

We have stayed at this cottage numerous times with our dog. Important factors for us is that the bed is large and comfortable, there is a fireplace and that the accommodation is clean and in a convenient location to the coastal walks. Coastguard Cottage meets this criteria on all counts.

Candice, Guildford

No 8 Coastguards is beautifully situated and appointed. The equipment in the cottage is comprehensive and the furnishings are smart, comfortable and stylish while preserving the essential character of a coastguard cottage. It is an ideal home for a family day and makes for the perfect base for a relaxing holiday. I shall certainly return.

Richard, Oxford

A wonderfully appointed cottage in a fabulous location… the fully equipped property was absolutely delightful and everything, including the furniture, bed linen and towels etc, was clearly carefully chosen - and of the highest quality. We just loved it. The location is fantastic, in a quiet and private road, just a five minute walk from the beautiful beach, with lovely views en route on each side of the path. The village is within easy walking distance and there’s a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating along the way, which also sells ice-creams. A perfect holiday in a perfect place.

Simply wonderful. Very comfortable and highly recommended.

Fiona, London

There is nothing to dislike about this utterly delightful and beautifully decorated cottage. It is surprisingly spacious and the ideal getaway for a family or friends. The garden and patio are big enough to enjoy eating and sitting outside but you are so close to the beach and other walking areas that you will spend plenty of time wandering around and enjoying the local area.

Fiona, Sawday's Inspector

We had the most wonderful time staying at the cottage, it had everything we needed. With the most perfect location being a few minutes walk away from the beech. We would definitely stay here again!

Cecilia, Cambridge

Perfect cottage - Amazing location…Happy Days. We’ll be back…

Nicki

Lovely cottage, great location - a haven for watching neighbouring Brent geese and other waders. Thank you!

Caroline

Our second, in what I think might become an annual trip to this beautiful wee cottage. The weather not so kind this year but returning to working fires after bracing walks was bliss!

Lisa

The cottage was beautifully presented and had all we needed for a comfortable stay. The location is absolutely fabulous. Such a treat to walk out of the gate and immediately experience such a beautiful natural environment. The coastal walks in all directions were stunning. Other than walking and throwing stones in to the sea, crabbing, bike trips into East Wittering and a few cafe/pubs stops were topped off by games around the table in the evening. Perfect.

Cindy

My family and I had a wonderful stay in the cottage this Easter. The location can’t be bettered and the cottage was perfect, cosy with everything we could have wanted. After a day on the beach it was brilliant to walk back to a welcoming cottage with an open fire. Looking forward to our next stay.

Location

The neighbourhood

West Wittering village is a five minute stroll away. It has an excellent café, butchers, beach shop and local shop. There are also two pubs and a restaurant. The nearby village of East Wittering is bigger and Chichester has heaps of choices for shopping and eating. You're in an enviously secluded spot but not at all remote: visit Goodwood and Chichester; sail, horse ride, cycle, walk, swim, golf.

Local points of interest from Pilar Lafuente

  • The house is a two-story Grade II listed terrace dating from 1834. The terrace and garden to the front of the house is a west facing sun trap and is furnished with a wooden table & chairs to take advantage of this for lovely leisurely meals in the garden.
  • The Landing café has the best coffee, lovely sandwiches and cakes and is a five minute walk from the cottage. Their summer hours are M-F: 8-6pm and Sat & Sun: 9-6
  • Local Activities: Watersports Riding Sailing Birdwatching Horseriding: Cakeham Stables Rambling Fishbourne Roman Palace Golf at Goodwood Racing at Goodwood Pallant House Gallery in Chichester Chichester Cathedral Chichester Multiplex cinema
  • East Head Sand Dunes: The cottage is on the last road before West Wittering Beach. West Wittering beach and the East Head sand dunes are managed by the National Trust. East Head is a 10 minute walk from the cottage along the newly rebuilt Harbour Wall Walk
  • Old House at Home 01243 511234 From The Landing you can see The Old House at Home to the right, across the street on Cakeham Road. This popular pub & restaurant gets filled up quickly so we recommend that you book a table if you wish to eat there.
  • Tessiers Butchers: Last, but not least, is Tessiers, a great & friendly butcher. As well as all the meats, including home-made sausages and a BBQ range, deli foods, butter, jams, biscuits.
