A very sweet seaside cottage with lovely gardens on a gentle, private estate just minutes on foot from a quiet beach and a village shop

Sleeps 4

The Experience

From the heart-shaped rose bed in the front garden to the horses peeping over the back fence, this is a friendly place to stay with a delightful old-fashioned charm. Older children will love being able to walk to the village through fields or take the wiggly path to a safe sandy beach (mostly devoid of tourists) in just ten minutes, or quicker by bike.

Inside is light and bright: a hall with stairs going up the middle, a comfy sofa, family pictures and a curved window seat. Take a cup of tea to the sun room overlooking the garden and relish the peace. The kitchen has all you need, with basics for cooking in the cupboards, an Aga to warm you in chilly months, a big table and two fridges. Bedrooms have linen from Peter Jones and lovely garden views.

Doors open up to the big lawn at the back of the house for games or sprawling. Stock up at the village shop – a ten-minute walk. There’s also a good butcher here and a cafe.

We had the most wonderful time in Caro's beautiful cottage. We had everything we needed and on arrival were greeted to the sound of classical music and cosy warm kitchen and tulips on the dining table. The house is in a very tranquil position and lovely views at the back overlooking fields with horses. I must mention that the beds were very comfy and there is a super shower, also the house was very clean. Caro was always on hand if we needed anything. We will definitely return, I didn't want to leave!

Susie, Henley on Thames

A lovely slice of a gentler age in seaside England with a sweet 30s cottage to enjoy it all from - including a wiggly path down to a very much quieter part of the sandy beach.

The neighbourhood

You could eschew the car the whole time if you wanted as it's such an easy walk to the beach or the village. But East Wittering is worth exploring and has a good fish shop. Eat out at Billy's on the Beach in Bracklesham Bay or The Crab and Lobster at Sidlesham - both are near by car. Join the coastal path for blowy, view-filled walks, or visit Chichester for Pallant House Gallery.

Caro Darlington

Glamorous Caro, a cellist who also modelled in the 60s, used to come here as a child with her great aunt and adored every moment. She always wanted to come back so she bought the cottage as her own home. As she travels quite a bit now she wanted the cottage to feel lived in and loved when she isn't here. She hopes you will care for this happy home as much as she does.
