The drive leads up through a sheep-scattered meadow to the splendid farmhouse and its small, newly fitted-out cottage. Unblemished and perfectly formed from a former garage, it is so shining new it appears to have come straight from the shop. Be cheered by fine new oak doors, flawless travertine bathroom floors, plumbing that never gurgles and a glistening silver fridge. Alison has lifted the mood with books, flowers and delicious organic food to start you off on the right foot, and there is real generosity of spirit, with all the logs you can burn and an open invitation to swim in their astonishingly handsome indoor, oak-framed pool. What is more, and this is the ‘coup de grace’, you are encouraged to use their exquisite walled garden for quiet moments under the apple bough and reflection by the ornamental pool; you also have your own tiny terrace overlooking handsome barns. This is the new National Park, with more to do than you could possibly manage in a week. Alison, a local GP, has only just started and is genuinely keen to find a hundred ways of making your stay special.
