The Experience

A clever conversion of part of the stables of a fine 15th-century village house; lucky horses occupy the other end. A spectacular barn – the owner’s studio is another part of the set-up here, in sculpture-dotted gardens with ponds and paddocks. Your cottage has its own young garden and a light, lofty and open-plan eating/living area; and the owner’s art on the walls.

No open fire needed – heating is underfloor and solar-powered. Cook in the big sociable kitchen – benefit the local community by stocking up at the family-run Southbourne Farm Shop, four miles away.  Set off on the South Downs Way for miles in any direction, find books, games and a TV for wet weather days. Bosham is two miles for eating out, Chichester is four miles for theatre and more restaurants.

Reviews

There's a lovely relaxed atmosphere to this whole place. Maybe it's the horses grazing in the paddock, the beautiful sculptures dotting the garden or Neil and Grace themselves who are kind and twinkly. This would be a restorative place to spend time.

Nicola, Sawday's inspector

What a beautiful location - we booked both the cottage and the Shepherd's Hut for a family wedding in the area - the cottage is very spacious and so comfortable with all mod cons and I had the best night sleep in the Shepherd's Hut - the owners were very welcoming and hospitable - highly recommend!

Monica, Aberystwyth

We are a family of 4, 2 adults, & an 11 & 13 year old who stayed for 3 nights, July 2013. We had a fab time: beautiful, well-equipped & comfortable cottage with welcoming hosts; peaceful rural location; plenty of activities & shopping/eating facilities nearby. Thoroughly enjoyed West Wittering beach, walking around Chichester harbour, Bosham and ferry across the bay to West Itchenor. Highly recommended!

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is surrounded by wonderful gardens full of sculptures. Just cross the road to join the South Downs Way which runs for nearly a hundred miles between Winchester and Eastbourne and, unlike many walking paths, is entirely suitable for cyclists and horses too. There's a pub in the village, the Richmond Arms, which you can stroll to or smarter places to eat in Chichester. Gardens to visit include West Dean and Petworth - the Weald & Downland Living Museum is a fascinating insight into English rural life.
