Winchelsea Beach, Sussex

Winchelsea Beach is your garden, Rye and Battle are close. The house is Scandinavian swish, sea views sublime. The pub is a wander away

Sleeps 6

A smart, comfortable and simple 1930s bungalow with wading pools and shingle beach to the front and rolling countryside at the back; lovely! You arrive down a mile-long bumpy track which runs parallel to the sea wall; the area’s an AONB and SSSI and home to an astonishing collection of birdlife. Inside there’s a Scandinavian feel with painted floorboards, unfussy furniture and walls in fresh white or cool greys; the large living room has a woodburning stove, shelves of books and games and views that make the lack of TV a huge bonus. A proper cooks’ kitchen has a smorgasbord of stuff – breadmaker, stainless steel work surfaces, great cookbooks – and there’s a long French table, bone china, stunning views. Bring tired children home after a beachy day, get the salt off in the family bathroom and sink them into the bright twin on the ground floor: the double here is perfect for parents who need to be close and has its own patio through French doors; sunrises are sublime. The ‘Master’ bedroom is up six steps: dominates the front of the house and has a small balcony overlooking the wetlands and views for miles over the pretty shingle garden and out to sea. A short walk takes you to shop or pub; take to the sea wall for miles of yomping to Rye or Hastings and beyond. Gorgeous.

This is a beautiful house in wonderful and peaceful surroundings. If we could spend our summer holiday here every year, we would.
