This splendid country-house hotel sits in 10 acres of English gardens with quilted fields circling the grounds and the South Downs Way passing within a mile. Potter about outside and find a croquet lawn, bowls lawn, two grass tennis courts and a six-hole golf course that slips into the country. Shrubberies burst with colour, there’s a terrace for afternoon tea, wellington boots wait at the front door for long country walks. You can snooze on sunbeds while listening to birdsong on the terrace by the outdoor pool, or nip inside to the indoor pool and spa which has treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms, Jacuzzi and a gym. The hotel is just as good, its country-house interiors filled with colour and style. The relaxed bar overlooks the garden, there’s a sitting room with the daily papers and a conservatory that opens onto a terrace for scrumptious breakfasts. Smart rooms have heavenly beds, chic bathrooms, big country views, perhaps a terrace. Delicious food is the final delight, perhaps crab and ginger risotto, duck with honey-glazed parsnips, mint chocolate soufflé with passion fruit sorbet. Exceptional.
