Pebble Hideaway

Eastbourne, Sussex

Delightful Nicky welcomes you to her new-look, ground-floor flat in grand old Eastbourne; come for beach and pier, art and theatre

It’s a grand avenue, Devonshire Park on one side and big houses on the other, built when the pleasures and benefits of seaside holidays became fashionable 150 years ago. Nicky’s house is one of the few that haven’t been divided up. She lives here with her teenage sons and cocker spaniel Charlie, runs a cookery business, can do breakfast and cordon bleu dinner if requested, and is utterly delightful. You have your own entrance and patio garden at the front of the ground-floor space. Inside, the attractive, well-equipped kitchen opens on to a pretty living room that welcomes you with pine dining table, soft sofa, two small armchairs and windows onto the patio. Colours are soft and quiet – blue, grey and white – and personal touches make it homely. The bedrooms have the same air of gentle comfort, brand new bedding and good storage space. And Nicky can provide all sorts of equipment for children. The bathroom is as newly decorated as the rest and there’s a second loo. Apart from the traditional seaside attractions of beach and pier, Eastbourne has two theatres and an excellent art gallery: fans of Eric Ravilious come hither.

We stayed two nights at Pebble Hideaway, a comfortable and beautiful flat, and felt cosseted and cocooned by Nicky's attention to detail. There was nothing that we wanted that she hadn't thought of. A vase full of irises and a generous slice of homemade cake greeted us on arrival; for entertainment there were books, magazines and we could stream programmes on iPlayer direct from our iPad. Never before have we had USB charging ports, hot-water bottles, a box of wellies (mixed sizes) and a dim movement-triggered light in the toilet, greatly appreciated by sleepy night time visitors! A magic stay

  • Eastbourne is a truly year round resort and plays host to a myriad of events not least the Aegon International tennis in June and the UK's best free airshow, Airborne in August. our two most famous events. And both right on our doorstep!
  • If an active break is what you're looking for there is plenty to choose from - sailing, kayaking, SUP boarding, cycling, swimming, walking, golf and tennis. We are blessed with both the sea and the beautiful South Downs right on our doorstep.
  • There's plenty to entertain the kids from days on the safe beaches to visiting many local tourist attractions - Fort Fun, Drusillas, Middle Farm, fossil hunting, swimming at the Sovereign centre, Redoubt Fortress and a miniature railway to name just a few.
