The Experience

This little row of cottages is set back from the road, with no cars or pedestrians passing. The front garden is paved and cobbled, roses ramble and you will get the sun most of the day, although there is a summer house which is always warm, even when dull. The sitting room has books, games and a gas wood-burner if you’re stuck indoors – read about Rye’s history and retreating shoreline – sheep now graze where waves used to break over the land.

Stroll along the wonky cobbled streets to stock up at artisan shops, or buy antiques, find cosy pubs, an art gallery and an independent cinema, as well as cafés and restaurants. A seven-minute bus ride will take you to Rye Harbour which runs along the river Rother and is fun for spotting yachts and fishing boats. Footpaths from here take you through a nature reserve with lots of bird hides.

Return to small but sweet bedrooms with plenty of storage space for all your gear. It’s very peaceful.

Reviews

We had the most incredible weekend in Rye at Scallop Cottage. The cottage has been beautifully done and the location is amazing, on a very cute little row set back from the street and right in the heart of town. It's easy to park close by and you can walk everywhere really easily. Ellie gave us some great recommendations to help us make the most of our time - we did picnics on the beach from a local deli and then went out for a couple of amazing dinners - and overall it felt like we'd been away much longer than a weekend. Can't wait to go back.

Scallop Cottage is heaven, simply. A perfectly designed, incredibly located bolthole for exploring Rye. We'll be back in winter for sure.

Camilla, Uckfield

We had a wonderful stay at Scallop Cottage. It was beautifully decorated and had a lovely front garden to enjoy the sunshine from. The perfect little bolthole to explore Rye from, we really enjoyed our time there. The owner, Eleanor, was so kind and helpful.

Melanie, London

Scallop cottage was so charming! The interior was decorated so beautifully and it was extremely clean and felt more like a home than a rental. It is in the heart or Rye near fabulous cafes, restaurants and shops. We definitely will be back again for this prime location, dreamy interiors and Eleanor was a fantastic host full of recs and extremely communicative!

Ava, London

Scallop cottage was such a lovely place to stay for the weekend! Ellie was so helpful in the lead-up, provided wonderful local recommendations, and really made things as simple as possible. We would absolutely stay again, and recommend to others!

Lauren, London

We spend the most perfect weekend at Scallop Cottage - we couldn't have loved it more. The cottage could not have been more perfectly situated - its right in the centre of the town but tucked away down a quiet passage. Rye is a delight and we will 100% be back!

Pip & James, London

Scallop Cottage is a lovely small cottage centrally situated, convenient for the station and everything else in Rye but it is still peaceful. It is equipped with many things that we have not found in other self-catering properties, and is a perfect base for a short break or longer holiday. Ellie's recommendations were all excellent, and we discovered plenty of other places to eat. We had a wonderful holiday!

Helen, St Albans

Scallop Cottage is a very well located and comfortable place to stay in Rye with good restaurants, cafes and delis just around the corner. We very much enjoyed excursions to the Kent and East Sussex vineyards and cycle rides along the coast.

Lieve, London

Scallop Cottage is lovely, stylish and cosy. It is the perfect location amongst the cobble streets in Rye. Fresh flowers were a lovely touch. Ellie’s restaurant recommendations are spot on. Just very relaxing. ..

Jennifer, Leigh-on-Sea

I highly recommend Scallop Cottage! It is a quaint home and in the perfect location. The host is super responsive and helpful. I look forward to visiting again soon.

Maria, Greenwich

A huge thank you to Ellie for all her help with arranging my visit to Scallop Cottage and for such a lovely welcome. The house is in a perfect position in the middle of town but so quiet and peaceful and perfect for getting around town with ease, close to the buses which go to the beach and two minutes from the train station. The house was so cosy, clean and comfortable. I hope I can visit again.

Andrea, London

A delightful cottage that more than lived up to expectations. Stylish and cosy; tastefully furnished and equipped to a very high standard. The position is ideal with the lovely garden providing an ideal spot for relaxing. In regards to parking, we used the very reasonable station car park which can be booked online.

Janet, London

Scallop Cottage was absolutely amazing, we came for our honeymoon and were so happy we did, it has been finished beautifully, its rare you get a place so nice and clean. The location is perfect, right in the center of town with easy access to all the local cafes, pubs, restaurants and a short drive from some fantastic beaches. Ellie was a great host and very helpful! We would love to come back.

Willis, London

I was thrilled to be the first guest at Scallop Cottage in Rye. There are no other words to describe it other than ‘it is a dream’! From the moment Eleanor met me to walk me through the cobbled passageway and show me round I knew I would fall in love with it. Eleanor is a wonderful and charming host and her own love of this family cottage, which she has recently renovated with such care, feels like a true home. Everything was immaculate and her attention to detail in furnishings, bedding, the bathroom, fresh flowers, books to read and the pretty garden with its summer house was perfect.

Mary, Cambridge

A sweet cottage with a lovely front garden just a short walk from the station. Explore wonky Rye with its higgledy-piggledy rooftops, cobbled streets and independent shops, or stride out on coastal and inland walks.

Location

The neighbourhood

Rye is a really good place to hang out in, steeped in history and smuggling stories. It's also famous for scallops - there's even a scallop week in February. St Mary's Church is a mecca for pilgrims, Lamb House is where Henry James lived, Jempson's is a local supermarket selling Romney Marsh groceries. You can walk to Camber Sands, or inland to Tillingham vineyard for wine tastings and pizza.

Local points of interest from Eleanor Neilson

  • Scallop is in the centre of Rye, a secluded spot but still a short walk away from the centre, including great pubs - The Standard, The Mermaid Inn, Ypres and The Globe.
  • Favourite local beaches include Camber Sands and Winchelsea (pebble beach).
  • Treat yourself to something sweet - visit Britcher and Rivers for old school favourites or Knoops for deadly hot chocolates.
  • St Mary's Church is a short walk away which dates back to 12th Century.
  • Explore the local independent shops including, Rae, Hunter Jones and the selection of antiques shops.
  • Discover the local area with great walks - including to the ancient Camber Castle and along the coast to the Firehills.

Introducing

Eleanor Neilson

Eleanor (Ellie) knows Rye very well. The cottage has been in her family for years and her Grandmother lived here at one time - you'll spot little nods to the scallop throughout the cottage because her Grandmother was so fond of them. Ellie works in healthcare PR and Communications, but loves to travel. She's used her experience as a guest to help her set up the cottage for others to enjoy.
