The
Experience

What was once a farm building has been reborn as a beautifully-designed nook tucked behind a wooden gate. Inside is brick and flint, with licks of cream paint rising to the oak vaulted ceiling. Bi-folding doors reveal views over Kingley Vale nature reserve and let in plenty of light. You’ll find a welcome basket of local goodies and a bottle of fizz to get you in the mood, and owner Lucy will leave you to it unless you call. It’s a short scramble up a ladder to the mezzanine bedroom (could be tricky for the less nimble, or very tall) with a king size bed and a pair of skylights for stargazing as you snuggle down. The luxurious bathroom has a rainfall shower (with room for two!), underfloor heating and a heap of fluffy towels. It’s only a mile to the White Horse at Chilgrove or Royal Oak at Lavant (a Tatler favourite), or prep a cosy sofa-supper at home. Sunset is perfect from the sheltered deck where it’s nicely peaceful apart from the odd traffic hum at busy times. Motorsport enthusiasts and foodies can be at Goodwood in minutes, or just wander straight out into the idyllic Sussex countryside.

Reviews

Shepherd's barn is a pristine and cozy conversion , thoughtfully designed with luxury fittings throughout . Lucy greeted us with a generous hamper of provisions and sparkling wine to start our short break in style . We walked straight out onto the Downs and Kingley Vale from where we had stunning views of the coastline . A bracing walk on the beach at West Wittering was perfect - we just missed having a dog with us ! We drove over to the beautiful Tinwood vineyard for a wine tasting of their latest vintages . We will return to Shepherd's barn soon to have a rejuvenating weekend .

This is an incredible property. The place is gorgeous. It is finished to a very high standard. You are slightly out of the way but that doesn’t detract from the property. Lucy keeps in contact with you throughout the booking process and nothing is too much trouble. I have stayed at some high end hotels but none have been finished to this standard. The hamper is a great touch. Good luck with the rest of the season and we will be back. No improvement needed.

Local points of interest from Lucy Hewlett

  • We are moments away from the Goodwood Estate which has so much to offer from the Flagship Events such as the Members Meetings, Festival of Speed, Horse Racing and the infamous Goodwood Revival. A must for any car lover as there is racing most days.
  • Also at Goodwood, you can learn to fly a plane, drive a Racing car, attend a Shoot or play a round of Golf. Never a dull moment for thrill seekers but if that's all too much book a pamper day at the Goodwood Hotel which has a spa and pool.
  • Walk to the West Deans Gardens which is one of the greatest restored gardens in the country. Enjoy a peaceful stroll followed by a relaxing lunch in the beautiful flint cafe. Visit the Edwardian pergola, Victorian glasshouses and walled kitchen garden.
  • On the doorstep is Kingley Vale Nature Reserve is known for its twisted, ancient yews & includes a grove of veteran trees which are among the oldest living things in Britain, the most stunning walks and views over the South Downs and towards the IOW.
  • It’s a 10-min drive to Bosham which is set between two tidal creeks at the eastern end of Chichester harbour, this picturesque village is stunning throughout the year for sailing, beautiful walks and rich wildlife. Just be careful where you park your car.
  • Surfs up at West Wittering. There are romantic, wind swept walks on the beach to blow the cobwebs away with views to IOW and sails. Stop at Chichester Marina for a delicious bite to eat and more Boat spotting on the way home.
