The Experience
You can walk to nearly everything you want. Cross the road and into a field for a five-minute stride to the sandy beach with a surf school and a cafe, The Landing, where you can get croissants, sandwiches and coffees. You can also walk to a good pub, The Old House at Home. But the kitchen here is very well equipped for even dedicated cooks, with a big table, and you’ll find all the basics – just replace what you use.
Relax in the large, light sitting room with good antiques, fresh flowers and a log fire – there’s another big table in here too. All the colours are gentle and warm, art adorns the walls and doors are thick and chunky. There’s a utility room for sandy gear or muddy boots, a raised and rustic patio area outside with a barbecue, and bedrooms with thick mattresses and crisp cotton.
Pack up a picnic and head to the beach, walk into the village for a good butcher and a little newsagent selling everything.

Location
The neighbourhood
This is a grand spot from which to explore, by foot, bike or in your car. A half hour walk will take you to East Wittering, another superb beach and a much greater choice of shops. The National Trust headland East Head is great for birdwatching and dog walking. Join the Salterns Way and hike to Chichester if you're feeling strong then fire up the barbecue and enjoy the peace of the garden.
Local points of interest from Amanda Pugh
- West Wittering beach, only a 5 min walk, is blessed with soft white sand and rolling dunes. Perfect for picnics, beach cricket, swimming, surfing, windsurfing and much more. Plenty of parking and a gorgeous cafe for hot chocolate and cake.
- Walk or cycle the Salterns Way. Its just moments from the cottage and leads all the way to Chichester. Stop off in Itchenor en route and catch the ferry to Bosham Hoe and enjoy pub lunch or picnic on the way.
- Try some old fashioned fun and go crabbing at Dell Quay or Bosham. Just take a line of string, some bacon and lots of patience. Enjoy lunch at the Crown & Anchor in Dell Quay or explore the harbour village of Bosham and nearby Fishbourne Roman Palace.
- Chichester is just 15 mins away with its beautiful Cathedral and if you enjoy theatre, there's Chichester Festival Hall. Goodwood is also just a 15 -20 mins drive, well known for its motorsports and horse racing events plus spectacular house and gardens.
- Portsmouth is a 30 minute drive and is perfect for some retail therapy at Gunwharf Quays. For some British Naval history visit Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Marvel at the Mary Rose and step aboard Nelson's HMS Victory to relive the Battle of Trafalgar.
- Further afield there are National Trust houses at Uppark and Petworth, the amazing Weald & Downland Museum in Singleton and the cathedral and castle in Arundel. Great restaurants and pubs are in abundance. Local faves are Billys on the Beach and The Lamb
