The Experience
This handsome old inn in pretty Robertsbridge has a warm welcome for all. The bare-boarded, earthy-hued bar/dining area is the perfect setting for richly textured fabrics, leather chairs, painted tables and period pieces. Family portraits gaze serenely down as you enjoy a pint of Rother Valley Level Best or a glass of sparkling wine and get cosy by the brick inglenook – famously favoured by Hilaire Belloc. If you’re peckish, look to the chalkboards for the day’s seasonal dishes: locally landed lemon sole, Rye Bay scallops, slow-roasted pork belly with Bramley apple spiced compote. Or opt for a chargrilled rib eye steak with homemade pink peppercorn sauce and crispy chips. Leave room for lovely puddings, especially the chocolatey ones. Upstairs, money has been lavished on four gorgeous rooms with superb Hypnos beds, signature wallpapers, rich fabrics, antique furniture and beautiful en suite shower rooms. Perfect for visiting nearby Battle, Rye, Bodiam Castle, Sissinghurst, Pashley Manor Gardens and more besides.
