The Experience

It’s not often you end up discussing the death of Athenian democracy with a barman, but that sort of thing is quite common here. The Griffin is English to its core, a posh inn with a streak of scruffiness, a community local that draws a devoted crowd. They come for the lively bar, the attractive restaurant and the club room for racing on Saturdays. In summer, life spills onto a smart terrace for local food cooked in a wood-fired oven. There’s a bar in the garden, weekend barbecues, deckchairs scattered across the lawns for ten-mile views over Pooh Bear’s Ashdown forest to Sheffield Park. Quirky bedrooms are nicely-priced. Some have wonky floors, others a four-poster, you’ll find timber frames, lovely old furniture, then robes and free-standing baths; those in the coach house are quieter. Seasonal menus offer tasty rustic food, perhaps rabbit gnocchi, local pheasant, dark chocolate tort with honey ice cream; excellent wines help you wash it all down. The pub has three cricket teams that travel the world in pursuit of glory – you may find them in the bar on a summer evening after a hot day in the field.

Reviews

We took over all the bedrooms over the weekend to house family and groom's party for a wedding at nearby Vineyard. Many ate on Friday evening in the garden and for Sunday lunch - hard to imagine a more perfect place for a once-in-a-lifetime event, Great food, drinks, breakfast, garden, staff, Bar, atmosphere .......the only snag was not being able to order rounds of rare beef sandwiches to fill the gap between Church rehearsal and the wedding ceremony !! A gem of a place - and despite leaving an open tab behind the bar, the drinks bill was tightly controlled and honest as the day was long.

JAMESjul, GREAT MALVERN

We stayed one night with friends on a golfing trip, between two very good courses - Ashdown Forest and Crowborough Beacon. Loved the pub, great atmosphere and excellent dinner and breakfast. Room on the small side, accessed from the courtyard, sloping ceiling with an interesting angle for the tv above us, but overall charmed by the pub and its staff.
