A 1623 dower house with pretty gardens, elegant interiors and delicious food in the restaurant - lovely local walking and Stonehenge wait

Read guest comments

This ancient village is a dream, a wormhole back in time, a fitting stage for this Grade-II listed house that dates to 1623. Outside, fine gardens sweep uphill to a ridge of old oak, where views stretch out across the valley. Inside, warm country-house interiors come with the odd beam, fine arched windows and original flagstones in the hall. You’ll find smart sofas, fresh flowers and the morning papers in the cosy sitting room, where a fire crackles on colder days. In summer, doors open onto a pretty terrace, where you can breakfast in good weather. Elegant bedrooms are deeply comfortable with pretty fabrics, mullioned windows and super-comfy beds. You get bowls of fruit, a sofa if there's room, then robes in spotless bathrooms. Spin downstairs for some lovely country food, perhaps wood pigeon with garlic, lemon sole with crab bisque, passion fruit soufflé with mango sorbet; climb back up afterwards to find your bed turned down. Uplifting walks start from the front door, the renovated coach house is perfect for small parties. Salisbury, Stonehenge and the gardens at Stourhead are close.

"We couldn't have picked a lovelier place to spend our 10th wedding anniversary. Champagne and croquet on the lawn in the glorious evening sunshine with swifts sweeping overhead and the heady scent of blossom... Then in to a stunning dinner celebrating seasonal, local ingredients - many plucked from their very own beautifully managed gardens. Afterwards, we drifted upstairs to our tastefully decorated room, complete with 17thC mullion windows, Nespresso machine, White Company smellies and a view of dreamy Wiltshire meadows. I may have died and gone to heaven...perfect."

"I have just spent two days at Howard's House Holel, with my girlfriend and her dog. Simon, one of owners, greeting us warmly on arrival Tuesday and could not have made us more at home. They are very doggie friendly. The hotel feels more like a private home, and is delightfully cozy. Our room on the top floor was comfortable and warm, with plenty of hot water available, The lounge and dining room are charming and the food delicious. It was our visit but certainly won't be the last - we cannot wait to return."
