The Experience

Hilary has an excellent eye for interiors and has furnished this old weavers’ cottage so cleverly that the compact space feels light and roomy. Inside, on one level, is where you live, eat and sleep: watch TV from the comfort of the two-seater velour sofa, whip up light meals in the smart little kitchen, sleep deeply in the prettily dressed bedroom – there’s a separate sparkling shower room. Deep windowsills draw your eye to verdant views; rustic old beams, original lintels and soft lighting make everything cosy. Step out to a dinky patio for al fresco breakfasts or evening sundowners. Hilary, Tim and their two young children live next door so you’re welcomed in, given plenty of local info and a generous hamper of bread, homemade jam, eggs, perhaps homemade cake or scones, and fresh flowers on the dining table. This is a leafy backwater in the Chalke Valley so all is utterly peaceful but there’s heaps of stuff to do nearby: Stonehenge, Salisbury, Cranborne Chase AONB, popular weekly markets – and you can walk to the village pub for supper.

Thoughtfully designed guesthouse with everything you need - including a fantastically well-equipped kitchen. Very comfortable bed and lovely bedding. Charming waterways nearby and good cycling. Thanks Hilary.

Little Bankside was a warm and comfortable base for us when we stayed there one cold, snowy weekend. Hilary welcomed us and was a great host - friendly, caring and aways ready to help or give local advice. The cottage is beautifully decorated and well-equipped. We had a very enjoyable walk through snowy fields to The Queen's Head pub for lunch, then back again along the river valley. Its a lovely area, and Little Bankside is in a great location. Thoroughly recommend!

Beautiful accomadation, clean and comfortable. Everything perfect, attention to detail is what makes it so good. Lovely welcome basket, even yummy cake! Lovely tranquil setting, yet easy to reach Salisbury, National Trust properties, and Broadlands at Romsey. Also nice walks. Perfect for a peaceful getaway.

We enjoyed a short stay at Little Bankside recently. It is situated on a quiet lane well away from the main road, and in the midst of the beautiful Chalke Valley.. Hilary gave us a warm welcome and showed us around the cottage, which has been restored and decorated to a very high standard indeed. Some provisions were left for us and also some delicious strawberries. The kitchen is very well equipped, and we enjoyed our meal sitting outside on our private terrace. Very comfy bed, and good shower. If I had to sum Little Bankside up with one word, it would be "charming".

I spent a week at Little Bankside as part of a business trip last year, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. It is a beautiful little cottage in a wonderful place. I visited Salisbury for a shopping trip, had some very good food at the village pub, used the excellent gym at Five Rivers leisure centre and enjoyed the country walks around Bishopstone, especially as it was blackberry season. The cottage has been cleverly and cosily designed, and the hosts were very welcoming. I think a break spent at Little Bankside is time well spent and I look forward to booking my next visit for the summer.

Local points of interest from Hilary King

  • Discover pretty walks, cycle rides and nature rambles from your doorstep as you explore the Chalke Valley. Rolling hills, chalk river valleys and pretty villages await. Bring your wellies, borrow our maps and get out and muddy.
  • Stroll along the lane to the village pub for a hearty supper and a pint with the locals, or make your way to the award winning village shop in neighbouring Broadchalke for a lazy coffee and a wedge of cake.
  • Sample the delightful combination of homemade Scotch eggs and pickles at the pub in Ebbesbourne Wake. Cosy up by the fire in winter or enjoy the pretty garden in summer.
  • Wonder at Salisbury Cathedral's inspiring silhouette as you explore the city and the Cathedral Close. Weave your way through the bustling market in Salisbury's Market Place. They have been held here since 1227.
  • Tour the elegant house and grounds of Wilton House or walk in your ancestors’ footsteps at world famous Stonehenge.
  • Visit the magnificent Stourhead or timeless Kingston Lacy. Both are within easy reach and have beautiful houses and gardens to explore. The autumn colours of Stourhead's landscape gardens are truly spectacular.
