The Lamb at Hindon

Salisbury, Wiltshire

This ancient inn has seen it all – plague, fire, civil war – but the Lamb lives on, a fine old village inn with lovely food and rooms

15 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

The Lamb has been serving ale on Hindon’s high street for 800 years. It’s a yard of England’s finest cloth, a place where shooting parties come to eat and farmers meet to chew the cud. Inside you find oak settles, roaring fires and painted panelling. A clipped Georgian elegance lingers; you almost expect Mr Darcy to walk in, give a tormented sigh, then turn on his heels and vanish. You’ll find flagstone floors, stripped boards, window seats and gilded mirrors, then a pine booth, where officials sat collecting tolls from passing travellers. At night, candles come out, as do some excellent wines, and you dig into lovely food: perhaps ham hock with piccalilli, roast quail with parsnips, bread and butter pudding. Refurbished rooms have pretty colours, crisp linen, smart bathrooms and Bakelite phones. Some even have their own private gardens. Expect padded headboards, lovely art, a huge lampshade or a claw-foot bath. Three suites in converted outhouses have an elegant contemporary style with vintage luggage, the odd chandelier and lovely bathrooms. Stourhead and Stonehenge are close.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Georgia Cobden

  • The Lamb is located in the centre of the beautiful village of Hindon which can be found in the West Wiltshire Downs, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is also close to one of the wonders of the Ancient world, Stonehenge.
  • The Lamb would have been trading as a public house as early as the 12th Century. By 1870 it was already well established as a posting Inn that supplied 300 post horses for coaches going to and from London and the West Country.
  • With attractions such as such as Old Wardour Castle, Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, Longleat Safari Park, Stourhead and the glorious walks of the Wiltshire Country Side.
  • Did you know that we are on the Wessex Walkway which means we are perfect for an overnight stop to rest those aching feet!
