The Experience

Wines to suit Spanish charcuterie, luscious local ciders, and a small terrace out back; welcome to the oldest pub in Worcester. Most of it is 18th-century – fine brickwork, sash windows – but it originates from the 14th and stands on a street of Tudor houses close to the cathedral. Step in to find an oak-planked bar and a carpeted ‘snug’ from whose easy chairs and leaded windows you can watch the world go by. The most atmospheric room is at the back, where dark wood panelling glows in the candlelight and the burner roars in the fireplace. As for the food, they keep it simple and authentic: hot pork pies, smoked kippers on toast, platters of fine local cheeses. Accompaniments include spicy chutneys, quince jellies, and ever-changing ales… how about Hobson’s Old Prickly? Then it’s up to one of the best bedrooms in Worcestershire. Immerse yourself in a world of soft carpets, polished antiques, glam wallpapers, and bathrooms that are state of the art (one with a tub in the room itself). Continental breakfast is delivered to your door, but there’s full English at Mac & Jac’s across the street.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Nigel Smith

  • The Cardinal's Hat is Worcester's oldest pub and originally dates back to the fourteenth century.
  • As with many an historic inn, we also have our own resident ghost. It is reputably that of a young girl, who was regularly seen by previous incumbents, drifting along the second floor in her flowing white night gown.
  • The Hat was officially re-opened on 1 May 2013 by national treasure and local porcelain expert, Mr Henry Sandon, amid much quintessential May Day merriment!
  • Friar Street is Worcester's oldest (and prettiest) street. As well as plenty of restaurants & boutique shop you can visit Greyfriars (National Trust) and Tudor House Museum
