We will come again! Very peaceful and quiet inside and outside the house. The room was very comfortable especially the very large bed. The breakfast was extremely tasty. Alice was very welcoming with numerous pots of tea at all times, and took us on an interesting walk through her fields to the village pub for supper.

Georgina, Keighley, west yorkshire

A lovely house with a fabulous host - Alice is a delight and can't do enough to welcome you and make you feel comfortable. Pots of tea, delicious breakfasts, cake in the garden - we were totally spoiled. I can't recommend highly enough!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Alice O'Neill

  • Hutton-le-Hole is picture postcard pretty with a stream, Ryedale Folk Museum (activity days for both adults and children), artisanal shops, good Pub (The Crown), quite often a car-boot sale and of course several cafes selling local honey and ice cream.
  • Walking straight from the front door in all directions. The house lies on the very edge of the largest expanse of heather moorland in England. Fabulous bicycling (bikes can be hired from Pickering). Pony treking nearby - all can be arranged for you.
  • Medieval Castles at Pickering and Helmsley, both market towns with all you need for a picnic or a pint before you sniff about the antique shops. The steam railway from Pickering to Whitby is a must and perfect for a wet day. Ask me for the timetable.
  • For those whose interest lies in ecclesiastical architecture we are surrounded by Cistercian Abbeys - Rievaulx, Byland, Kirkham, and of course Whitby. Lastingham Church a beautiful walk from the house contains one of the earliest Crypts. EXCELLENT PUB too!
  • The Sykes Church Trail takes you over the Wolds towards the coast. For lovers of the Arts and Crafts movement these are hidden treasure. Excellent fish and chips at Wetwang! For more discerning palates The Star at Harome (Michelin Star) is 4 miles from us.
  • World class music during the two summer festivals (Ryedale Fest. last 2 weeks July, North York Moors Chamber Music Fest, last 2 weeks August) Tickets and programmes on the web. Your chance to hear the very best in beautiful settings AND talk to the artists
