The Experience

This 17th-century coaching inn was once the grande dame of Beverley and has now been rescued from the doldrums. It’s a buzzing place full of ladies who lunch, deeply efficient staff and excellent food from fine dining to a home cooked pie and good local ale at the bar.

There are plenty of places to unwind – lounges with comfy seating areas and blazing fires, a restaurant in the conservatory, a terrace with a fire pit, and two bars – one for champagne, the other cosy and overlooking the lovely St Mary’s church.

Discover homemade biscuits on the tea tray in your room, and the full Yorkshire breakfasts include black pudding – late risers can choose from the brunch menu. Eat in at the all-day restaurant or walk down the road for Michelin-starred dining at The Westwood. You’re also two minutes from the Market Square and lots of good shops. Explore the 15th-century North Bar gate and the fine Gothic church of Beverley Minster.

Location

The neighbourhood

Beverley is a sophisticated market town with good high street shops, independent boutiques and an upmarket department store (Browns) housed in a characterful old Corn Exchange. Markets are held twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday, and there are festivals held throughout the year. You can have a flutter on the horses at the racecourse just a short trot out of town, which is the most raced in the UK. The famous Humber Bridge is very close too, and for bird watching the nearby coastal town of Bempton has puffins.
