The Experience

A cute little find on the Whitby coast, a friendly restaurant with rooms ten paces from the beach at Sandsend. It’s small, intimate and very welcoming. Tim cooks brilliantly, David talks you through his excellent wine list and passes on the local news. Cliffs rise to the north, the beach runs away to the south, ducks on the river occasionally waddle across the road. There’s a terrace at the front for drinks in summer and a small bar on the lower ground, where you can watch Tim at work in his kitchen. Upstairs, two dining rooms swim in coastal light and come with stripped floors and white tablecloths. People come from miles around for the seafood – the lobster thermidor is a big draw – but carnivores are well looked after, so try home-smoked salmon with a gin and tonic jelly, stuffed pork tenderloin or Whitby crab, strawberry and champagne trifle. Bedrooms – smallish on the first floor, tiny on the second! – have crisp linen and shuttered windows. Breakfast is delicious, David’s mum makes the marmalade. Cliff walks and the moors wait, and you can follow the river up to Mulgrave Castle.

We had an excellent experience at Estbeck. The food was absolutely delicious and really well presented. A great place to dine and so convenient for a walk along the seafront. We had a great time.

David and Tim are exemplary hosts. We were made to feel very welcome and they went out of the way to make sure we were comfortable and meet our every need. Food and wine are taken taken seriously - meals that are imaginatively created with lots of attention to detail. For fish lovers in particular this is a great place to eat and to stay. Easy to walk along the beach to Whitby or up to the moors along the cliffs.

Sawday's does it again! A lovely little hotel on the shore of Est Beck very near Whitby, with a fabulous kitchen. We were offered fish that had been caught that morning beautifully prepared, and some of the best scallops we have ever had. Our host David was very informative about the area, which we appreciated. The only drawback was the steepness of the stairs, an unavoidable problem in old houses. We loved being able to have a drink in the sunny courtyard on one of the hottest days of the summer.

  • The Yorkshire Moors are on our doorstep and the walking is hard to beat.
  • Whitby, a lovely old fishing town, is down the road. Captain Cook lived here, the ruined abbey inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula.
  • Castle Howard - famous for Brideshead Revisited - is a good day out
