The Experience

It’s relaxing here surrounded by William Morris wallpaper and 18th-century beams. Wake to the gentle chime of church bells, stroll to the shop for a breakfast loaf and cook together in the kitchen. Spend days out walking along the Cleveland Way with dogs in tow, thaw out cold toes in front of the open fire, and amble out through Helmsley’s chocolate box charming streets in search of dinner.

It’s a spoiling place for romantics with a sun-trap courtyard for lazy light evenings and a spa at the Feversham Arms where you can book yourselves in to be cossetted. Families and friends would be quite happy here too, in the two chintzy bedrooms – older children will love the attic.

You’re in the perfect spot for getting out and about, at the gateway to the moors with the coast just 30 minutes’ drive away. York city is under an hour: walk around the walls, browse the shops in Stonegate and return to Hemsley in time for tea.

Reviews

cottage very nice loads of hand gel in most rooms, parking not easy afternoons when busy in Helmsley.

June, Stanley

Lovely cottage, cosy and easy access into the town. Lovely walks and plenty to do close by. Good size rooms and pretty courtyard garden. Birds of prey, local micro brewery a must.

Janet, Stafford

And we're back and it just feels like home! Lovely cottage, superb location and a fabulous break, what more can you ask. It might have to be September for next year though, watching the beaters coming back from the moors in full tweed gear just adds to the experience. Thank you.

Malcolm, Warwicks

I have to be honest and say that I could live in Helmsley, it has such a huge list of things going for it. Add the beautiful Fox Cottage to the mix along with being able to take the dog and it becomes just a genuine delight. I stayed there last year for the first time and booked again for this year almost as soon as I got home. It is cosy, great value and in a superb location literally minutes from the village square. Just light the fire, sit back and relax...

Malcolm, Warwicks

We absolutely loved our stay at Fox Cottage in the beautiful village of Helmsley. Close to amenities and the Cleveland Way. The cottage is very comfortable and fully equipped with everything you need, a real "home away from home" Wouldn't hesitate to stay again.... highly recommend!

Jean, London

Fox Cottage is an extremely clean and comfortable cottage, well equipped with all necessities. Excellent communication by owner who was both considerate and accommodating. A very appealing period cottage in a picturesque village. Very highly recommended!

Alan & Nancy, Delta, British Columbia, Canada

Fox Cottage is a delightful, cosy cottage complete with toasty open fire and beautiful William Morris wallpaper. The kitchen is modern, very well equipped and bright, yet still retains a cottagey charm. Well priced for singles, couples or a small family, this delightfully quirky cottage features a stunning, large master bedroom and equally huge bathroom with walk in shower and separate bath. Its a perfect, peaceful bolt hole conveniently situated just a couple of minutes stroll from the bustling main square of Helmsley. In fact, Fox Cottage is so good, we have booked to return again in 2019.

Melanie, Hampshire

Fox Cottage is a delightful, cosy, country retreat for 4 people and their dog. It is full of character with the old beams, open fire and William Morris wallpaper. The small yard is a lovely sun trap, and the good-sized kitchen is well equipped. The unusually large bathroom is a surprise, and the characterful bedrooms made for relaxation. One of the best things is that all the delights of the vibrant market town of Helmsley are right on your doorstep, with plenty to discover.

Location

The neighbourhood

You’re in the heart of the village but the cottage feels tucked away, on a peaceful stretch of the High Street with pale gold houses on either side. Helmsley has lots going on: a buzzy Friday farmers’ market, a thriving shopping street and lots of pubs and restaurants you can get to on foot – try and resist the window display in the Cinnamon Twist bakery just along the road. Stock the cupboards with goodies from Hunters Deli and pick up country clothes for rambles at Browns department store. Helmsley Castle and gardens are within a few minutes’ walk.
