The
Experience
Reconnect in this former smuggler’s cove in the North York Moors National Park. Cook together in the charming kitchen – handmade and hand-painted – and serve up suppers on the table in the bay window. On rainy days take lazy breakfasts in bed or stoke the fires and sink into the sofas with books and games. Bedrooms are beautifully outfitted in antiques. When the sun shines you’ll find a little bench on the front path for your morning coffee – greeting the locals as they go. Martin and Diana have left you the essentials – add to them with dressed crab from the fishmonger or scones from the tea room.Check the tide and amble to Ravenscar’s wild seal colony across the wide stretch of sand or bring bikes to pedal part of the Coast to Coast route which starts nearby.

What a joy to stay at Greenfield Cottage, so beautifully renovated using lots of reclaimed materials. We could have spent all day looking at the artefacts safely displayed about the cottage. Its obvious an artist has worked on the restoration, adding some highly amusing detail. Its also very comfortable with top quality beds, furnishings & linen, plus all you’ll need in a modern kitchen. 2 minutes from a huge clean beach, cafe’s pubs, bistro a few indie shops, fab chippy & the Cleveland Way close by - so loads to do without any commercial nonsense. Can’t wait to return.

Location
The neighbourhood
The whole of the lower village is listed and around the cottage little houses snuggle up together on the bumpy narrow alleyways that make up Robin’s Hood Bay and its maze of cobbled streets. You’ll feel wonderfully tucked away, yet you’re just moments from the sea and 200 yards from the nearest pub. Take your pick from the Bramblewick or Smugglers bistros or The Laurel Inn; The Bay Hotel and The Dolphin do pub grub and welcome children and dogs. Dracula’s gothic Whitby is just over five miles away, with its long pier and beaches.
Local points of interest from Martin & Diana Decent
- Enjoy spectacular walks along the Cleveland Way, which passes through Robin Hood's Bay. The coastal path is lined in spring with violets and primroses. In late summer you will find rosehips, and sloes within the smell of coconut/vanilla the scent of gorse.
- At low tide take a long walk along the beach towards Ravenscar where you can find fossils in the exposed seabed and whole bivalves in the shingle. At the Ravenscar headland you can usually watch the established colony of grey seals basking on the rocks.
- Cycle the "Cindertrack" which skirts the village. - It's a traffic free cycle route with some inclines but no hills! North to Whitby or south to Scarborough and beyond. Cycle hire is available at Hawsker a few miles away and this includes electric bikes.
- Explore the National Park by car or check out the North Yorkshire Steam Railway which runs from Whitby to Goathland or longer to the old market town of Pickering ( approx. 2 hours). Enjoy the dramatic scenery of the National Park from a unique viewpoint.
- Nearby Whitby is a magnet for tourists. With the 7th Century Abbey, Dracula and occasional Goths, Captain Cook's Endeavour, and The Magpie - voted best UK fish and chips. The free art gallery has a fine collection of works by Laura Knight's Staithes Group.
- Even the amateur will be impressed by the local bird life! Swallows swoop and dive from early summer around houses. The beaches attract turnstones, eiders, grebes, various gulls and oystercatchers at low tide and cormorants drying their wings in the sun.

Introducing
Martin & Diana Decent
Martin and Diana Decent have spent three decades escaping to Robin’s Hood Bay with their children. Now they have their own corner of coast to call their own they’ve filled it with their collection of art and trinkets, proudly displayed for all to see. They live in Sheffield but have enlisted a local caretaker to look after you and the cottage.
Martin and Diane have created and preserved this lovely cottage to a very high standard. It is situated in a peaceful street yet close to the bay and beach. The view of the sun rise from the top bedroom was a sight to behold. Thank you again.
