Bed & Breakfast

Old watermill in a Dales village with friendly hosts, locally sourced food, roaring fires. Sleeps 6 in tip-top comfort with riverside views

3 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

Off the village green this handsome historic mill in the Dales keeps many of its original features. The huge beamed guest sitting room has a roaring fire, and the old waterwheel is working! Friendly relaxed Neil and Jane have restored their home, then filled it with interesting art, quirky sculpture, flowers and vintage gems. Bedrooms have tip-top linen and luxurious throws; bathrooms are fabulous. Eat well at separate tables on all things local and home-grown: bacon, pancakes, homemade bread; and for dinner, perhaps Yorkshire ham or herby lamb. The pretty riverside garden is perfect for chilling with a glass of wine.

Nice location, quirky but interesting building. Neil welcoming but not the most engaging host, met Jane only when leaving. Accommodation good, nice bedding and lovely bathroom. Good breakfasts.

Fanstastic room, food and setting. Great hosts who seemed to have catered for just about everything. Look forward to returning in the future.

On first entering the Low Mill Guest House you know you have come to stay somewhere special. We stayed in the Store Room under beautiful old beams. We ate out at one of the local pubs recommended. Morning breakfast was excellent and the tour of the now restored wheel and workings of the mill fascinating.

Stone steps led us to our room where the antiquity merged with the luxury: the beams above our comfortable bed, an ancient mirror, squeeky wardrobe door made us feel as if we were in a fairytale which lasted even when we switched the spotlights on. The diner pampered our taste buds to the point of utter bliss. Time was measured there by the ticking of a wooden clock against the murmur of a stream coming from a half-open window. A fragrance of lavender soap made a bath a truly relaxing experience. The mill was like an inside of a huge clock with its clever mechanism and the water wheel.

Local points of interest from Neil McNair

  • We have a lovely riverside garden with dippers, kingfishers and wagtails seen regularily, you may even spot a gorilla,a giant octopus or a tardis ! When the weathers good and the gorilla isnt hungry we serve tea and cake in the garden !
  • Aysgarth Falls and Bolton castle are a short drive away from Low Mill , with a lovely 6 mile walk between the two, also the pretty village of West Burton has its own waterfall and the impressive Hardraw forces is a short drive or walk away
  • We have fabulous walks from the door up to Semer Water or Mill Gill waterfall all taking in the stunning and varied Dales scenery, this really is walking country at its best
  • The famous Wensleydale cheese is made a few miles from our door in Hawes ,you can take a stroll round their rather scrummy tasting table
  • Brilliant cycling routes are all around us with the famous Buttertubs pass a short pedal away, the tour de france came past our door in 2014 and they get up the hills a bit quicker than we do !!
  • The Yorkshire weather may be unpredictable but the views around us are always stunning however the weather
