The Experience

Guests feel right at home in this informal, friendly 16th-century farmhouse. Outside, you’ll find hens, cats and dogs, bees, Doris the horse… Inside, all is cosy with well-loved family pieces.

A winding steep stair leads to big bedrooms, two more equally inviting ones are out in the converted 18th-century smithy. All have tea trays, homemade shortbread, TVs and Roberts radios – and comfy private sitting areas to come back to after a day’s exploring. Breakfast is a sociable affair – tuck into homemade muffins, garden red and black currants and honey, poached pears with cinnamon, a sizzling full Monty with eggs from the farm or a Whitby kipper.

Maggie’s enthusiasm for this glorious area is infectious – you’ll love the walks in the Dales and Moors (she lends maps), Ripon with its cathedral and good restaurants is a 10-minute drive and there are lots of historic homes and gardens to visit.

Reviews

We could not have enjoyed our stay at Mallard Grange more. Five star all the way. Maggie is the most generous and friendly host and she went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. Outstanding breakfasts and lovely to be given lots of local Yorkshire knowledge. Maggie is very thorough in adhering to covid rules. Could not recommend Mallard Grange more!

Kate and Edward, Cirencester

I was made to feel instantly at home here - Maggie is very friendly and welcoming, and her house is comfortable and homely. Breakfasts sound amazing with lots of interesting conversations around the big, shared table. Food is fresh, local and sustainable - a lot from the farm and gardens. There's so much to do in the area too, or just sit with a wine in the garden.

Zoe, Sawday's inspector

All one could want in a farm B&B: a warm welcome, bags of character, lovely rooms, peaceful surroundings, loads of good tips for places to visit and where to eat... and a brilliant breakfast! Mallard Grange is also ideally placed for visiting Fountains Abbey, Pately Bridge, Ripon... and lovely walks in the Dales. Thank you, Maggie.

Peter, Lichfield

One perfect stay! Maggie is so welcoming, the rooms quiet and very comfortable, the breakfasts magnificent (even for Yorkshire!). Maggie and her team went out of their way to ensure our stay was perfect in every way. Hope to be back - soon!

MC, Malmesbury

B&Bs do not get better than this.Good location for large area around, excellent hostess and food. Beautifully quiet even for people used to living in the countryside. Good restaurants and pubs locally as well. Visitor info best ever received at hotels or B&Bs. A peach. Sawdays are always good but this is in another class.

David, Dumfries

A charming place and ideal for visiting the dales. Maggie is the perfect host providing delicious breakfasts along with local knowledge and amusing stories. We will definitely stay again next time we are in Yorkshire.

Introducing

Maggie Johnson

Charles’ family have lived at Mallard Grange since 1933. Maggie used to work in TV until she moved to the farm; she's been doing B&B since 1993 and happy guests return again and again. She loves riding her horse and bee keeping. They have two children who've flown the nest. Indy the Cocker Spaniel and Labrador Tia live here too.
