Come for the privilege of staying in this listed Georgian country house perched above the River Swale and surrounded by its own fecund parkland. You’ll feel nicely private in your own first floor apartment in a separate wing: find a light bright living room with fresh gingham curtains, a comfy sofa, a wood-burner for chilly nights and plenty of art on the walls. There’s a smartly-equipped, gleaming kitchen where Isobel leaves you all the basics but also homemade flapjack – lovely to come home to after a hearty walk. The bedroom is restful in cream and duck egg blue, the deep mattress piled high with white cotton linen and a feather duvet; the large bathroom (not separate – put the screen up if you’re modest) has lovely soft towels and White Company treats. Don your wellies and take a tour of the grounds, play tennis or fish here (by arrangement), hike seriously in the Dales or Moors, explore York and Harrogate for shopping and culture, visit the small rural market towns of Northallerton or Thirsk for quirky independent shops. Or simply stay put and hunker down if you prefer peace and quiet.
